It was the second day since the boss' departure. It usually took three to five weeks until he returned. Mia had to structure and plan her 'vacation' well.

Of course one would consider the boss leaving as a vacation though conditions were not up to the standard of living.

The boss was one kind of a person. His ways weren't understood by a lot of people. Why would he use women for the purpose of hard labor when he could just use men?

What seemed to annoy Mia even more was the fact that he was getting 'a two-in-one benefit'..as the boss would call it, from them. Using them for his own sexual purposes and primarily for labor.

As Mia sat on a boulder that was set in front of a tree, she opened her journal. Conrad had given it to her the day before. She stowed it with him due to the conditions she was living in. Nothing or nowhere was safe.

Pulling the pen out of the spine of the journal, she began writing. It had been weeks since she opened it so she wrote everything that had happened to her over those weeks. Not missing a single detail.

She then recalled the events from two days ago when she visited her girls. The knock on the door had scared everyone to the core and no one even dared to move.

When Conrad picked up a gun, ready to face the intruder, Isaac called out to them. A slap would have been the least ways of punishing him for giving them such a scare.

"Time to work!" a voice shouted. Lifting her head and squinting to have a better view of the person, she realized it was Isaac. Grunting, she reluctantly shut the book and rose from the boulder she sat on.

"Isaac I need you to give this to Conrad. I'd take it at the end of the day. Or maybe tomorrow." she shrugged, as she now stood in front of him.

"No problem. Now please get to work. I don't want that good for nothing coming back to find that my work is cos ninety. Next time around he might not put me in charge if that happens." he stretched his hand to take the book from her. Mia nodded. She understood him.

When she spotted her supervisor sitting on a rock, she quickened her pace toward him. He finally caught sight of her and instead of rising to meet her, he headed in the opposite direction expecting her to follow him.

A perplexed Mia had to jog to catch up with him.

"Hey! Where are you going? Aren't you supposed to supervise me. It's time to work." she questioned.

"Just shut up and follow me." he instructed. Clearly, he must have been waiting for her. He could have said that more politely with elaboration, Mia thought.

"What!! Excuse me? Are you fucking outta ya mind??" Anytime Mia used vulgar language it only meant she was getting pissed or she was angry. She came to a halt.

"I'm not following you anywhere until you tell me where the hell you're taking me to." she said firmly causing her supervisor to stop.

He fixed his stern gaze on her for a few minutes before speaking. "You're so stubborn." he paused and sighed. "Denise." he added.

"Denise?" she repeated with a question. "Who's that?" she asked curiously. She used her hand to shield her eyes from the scorching sun that hindered her view of the man.

"If you want to stand under the sun the whole day, you can stay there. But I've got a soul to help." he said, turned and continued walking. If he could help 'that soul' alone why did he bother trying to get her help, she thought with a scoff.

Mia was as confused as ever. She would have walked away though if not for the fact that he made mention of a soul to help and clearly, he needed her help.

Reluctantly, she followed him. Finally, they got to a part of the Island Mia had only seen the first day she stepped foot on the Island.

"What are we doing here? I can't even remember the last time I came here." she said checking her surroundings. He ignored her question and just kept moving. He stooped low to enter a cave that Mia barely noticed the first time she came around and even now.

As she followed the man into the cave, she thought she heard muffled voices. Then a baby started crying. A baby? Here? Alone in the cave? She couldn't help the questions that flooded her mind.

"Denise?" her supervisor whispered.

"Draw nearer." he ordered. There were sounds of something being dragged then after a girl came into view. Mia knew the girl by face not by name or personality. She realized a while after that it was the girl that was in labor some nights ago.

"Thank you Papa." Papa? The man was her father. He had a daughter yet he was so cruel!

"Mia, I called you here because I need your help." Now he was admitting he needed her help. She managed to prevent the lopsided grin due to the situation. I need you to find a safe place for him. Just....please...just do not hand him over to the boss. I beg of you." she was referring to the baby.

A few years ago, those words would have come from Mia's lips. She understood the plight of the woman 'cause she had gone through a similar thing. She understood why Denise didn't want the boss to find out about the baby.

If he did, he would ask of the father and that would turn out into something else.

"Alright. But what about you? Will you be alright?" Mia asked with a hint of concern in her voice.

"I hope I would be. I'll be very glad though if you helped me in any way possible."

All the while, Mia's supervisor just looked on. Mia stole a glance at him and from his stance, he was ready to do anything she ordered him to do. Be it good or bad, as long as it was in name of helping his daughter.

Even the 'cruelest' of people had a weakness. Mia thought. But Mia understood that even if he did not want his daughter to be a slave on the Island he could not help her. To him, there was no place to go.

After a lengthy chat with Denise, Mia left the cave with her supervisor. She had promised to come for the baby later in the evening.

"Get to work please." her supervisor instructed once they had gotten to the work site.

And....back to normal. Mia said mentally and rolled her eyeballs. The softness of his voice and the use of please couldn't go unnoticed though.

Mia sat up in bed, her mind wandering about. She had gone for the baby and sent him to Rose for the night. Now she was contemplating as to whether she should take the boy to Conrad's mother. Heaving a huge sigh, she coiled herself in and fell asleep.

Her mother: Jenna, just kept running with not an idea of where she was going. Mia stood frozen in place. How she could help her mother, she didn't know. She couldn't think straight.

Then an arrow was seen flying in Jenna's direction.

Silence. The scrunching of the dried leaves while Jenna run was no longer heard as she had dropped to the floor.

Dead.

NB: The end was a dream and that's why I put it in Italics. Thanks for reading.. :)
