A month later....

Ring ring ring. The sound of the bell. But at that particular time, it only meant an assembly. The boss had returned a few days ago much to the annoyance of the women. The weeks had flown by too quickly.

The boss cleared his throat as he mounted the platform. He had this wide grin or smirk, whatever you'd like to call it, plastered on his face which annoyed Mia to no end. She scrunched up her nose in disgust and rolled her eyeballs.

"A good afternoon to y'all." he began.

"What is good about this afternoon with your presence?" Lily muttered under her breathe.

"I'm happy to be back with you...wonderful women. I deem it a pleasure to be standing before you today, considering the fact that I almost never returned." he exhaled sharply.

"Well cheers to that!" Kayla exclaimed with a fake smile, raising an imaginary glass to all women who turned to look at her. Looking over at Mia, she got an approving and satisfactory look from her. "You should have died though. My celebration would have been a much larger and fancier one." she added.

A guard made an attempt to grab Kayla but the boss raised a hand to stop him. "I'd rather choose to ignore that. As I was saying, it feels good to be back. However, there are some new and interesting things I would like to share. I wouldn't like to take up any of your time so I'll just go straight to the point."

By the time he was done telling the tale of his adventures outside the Island, all women had their hearts in the pit of their stomachs!

"So as I have already said, you will have to do double up the work you've been doing. I cannot and would not disappoint my partner. He has decided to help my mini quarry down here big time, since my last partner cut off any sort of connections we had. You my dear women, are going to make me all the money I deserve. Thanks for all your time, co-operation and understanding. Have a good day." he concluded, stepped down and walked away.

No one made a sound as everyone was frightened. They were already over working and now they had to do double the work they used to do. Slowly the crowd melted away. Each person resuming their work.

Not much was said between the workers the whole day. On a normal day, one would hear the booming sound of the hammer against the rocks plus the voices of the women. Today, it was more of the hammer and less of the women.

"I can't believe this. We have to do double of our overworking?" Lily said, sounding more like a question than a statement.

"I guess." Mia who had been thinking hard since they dispersed said.

The trio parted ways at a point to resume their work.

Mia was still thinking hard with a deep frown formed on her face, when she picked up her hammer and began breaking the big stones into smaller bits.

Later that night, Mia tossed and turned in bed restless. She was still in deep thought. The one word that had been on her mind since the announcements earlier on was escape. She had to escape, run away to a safer place. Maybe to where her children were hidden. She couldn't decide.

In her opinion, it was about time she lived a more comfortable life. But her presence on the Island was really known and her disappearance would be noticed in no time.

There was nothing more refreshing than a sound sleep. Although Mia was emotionally unstable before sleeping, she rested well.

The day had no special plans other than the daily routine of waking up then heading straight to the work site only to break stones.

Mia spotted Conrad in a distance doing some supervision. She smiled when she saw that he was being lenient with one of the new girls in her teens. The girl had been weeping ever since she arrived. The best Mia could do was tell her the normal tale of "everything is going to be fine". The girl whom Mia learned was named Leah, didn't believe it but said nothing. Due to her kindness and attention, she won the Leah's trust.

After realising she was smiling too much, she resumed her work. Someway somehow, her supervisor thought it wise to take it easy on her. It was probably because of the help she gave his daughter or he just decided to be nicer and less wicked, Mia concluded. Whichever way, she was grateful.

Then she began to muse on what she was thinking about last night. If she got caught escaping, she would only be aggravating her situation. She decided to talk to Conrad about it for his opinion.

Remembering that she had to talk to Rose, she dropped her hammer and made her way there.

She knocked steadily on the door and a minute later a woman stood behind the door. "Can I speak to Rose?" she asked.

"Wait a minute." she said and went back in. She arrived later with Rose.

"What's going on?" Rose asked Mia with concern laced thickly in her voice.

"Relax. I just wanted to ask about Denise's child. How's everything?" she said whispering the latter.

"Whew! You gave me quite a fright there. The child is fine. There's no problem." she replied.

"Denise has a child?!!" the boss' voice barked the question with fury.

Im sorry for the late update abd such a boring chapter. I experienced a wrtiters blog here so I just wrote what came to mind.
