Dust motes hovered in the air before John. He left Tolie outside to keep lookout, while he searched inside for supplies and other survivors. The bandana tied over his mouth helped to diffuse the stream of his breath, so as to not disrupt any naturally occurring air streams. That was how one stayed safe when considering the "vaan," as they called them.
Treading cautiously, John took measured steps, going from the kitchen towards the back of the house. It looks like they left quickly. Maybe three people in that group. The fact that the previous occupants did not leave the house in a prepared state was good news. It meant that John and Tolie might actually get to see their first humans ever.
