I held the doll in my hand as I walked over to the bucket of gardening tools and grabbed a pair of secateurs. They were usually used to prune the plants but in this case, they were going to be used for something much more useful.
I put the secateurs on the thread of the button eye and cut the thread. I pulled the button off and threw it on the ground. I did that to the other eye as well.
Once I'd done both, I picked up the buttons and used a rock to smash them into pieces. I buried the doll in the mud again and put a rock on top of the spot it was buried.
"Coraline, I won't let her touch you. I promise" Wybie said as he smiled at me.
"Thank you, Wybie. It means a lot" I replied as I smiled at him.
Wybie and I walked away from the garden and I looked back at the spot I had buried the doll. Something still didn't feel right. I had an uneasy feeling. Maybe it was all the memories flooding back in.
"Are you coming in?" I asked.
"Yeah, why not" Wybie replied and we went inside.
"Hey guys" my mom called out as we came in.
"Hey mom" I replied and we sat at the table.
"You guys hungry? I'm making grilled cheese" she asked and held up a plate.
I looked at Wybie who grinned at me.
"If you don't mind making us some. That would be great, thanks mom" I said.
We left the room and went upstairs to my bedroom. Wybie sat at my desk and I sat on my bed as we talked in a hushed tone about the doll and the portal.
"It cant be coincidence" I said. "The beldam must still be alive"
"But how?" Wybie asked.
" I don't know...I don't understand anything about this. I don't even know how the other world came to be. It's not even scientifically possible but somehow its real" I said.
"Well lets say that the Beldam is alive. She can't come into our world, right? So we don't have anything to worry about" Wybie said.
"But Wybie, think about the other people who are going to move in here. Their children will be at risk of being taken!" I explained.
"Coraline! Wybie! Foods ready!" my mom called out and we ended the conversation.
We sat at the table where my dad was sitting. He was eating his grilled cheese with a grin.
As we all sat and ate, my dad suddenly said "so, what's up with you two? Lovers quarrel?"
"We're not dating!" I exclaimed.
"Why not?" my mom asked.
"Because he doesn't like me like that" I said.
"Hey who said I don't?" Wybie asked.
"Wait, so you like me?" I asked.
"Maybe I do, maybe I don't?" Wybie replied with a grin.
I went red in the face from embarrassment. Does Wybie like me?
The conversation came to an end and Wybie and I went outside.
"I better get back to my Grandma" Wybie said.
"Alright, well I'll see you tomorrow?" I asked.
"Yeah" Wybie replied. "Oh and for the record. I do like you Coraline"
"You do?" I asked.
"Yeah, I thought it was kind of obvious" he admitted with a laugh. "Cya" Wybie added and then walked away.
I went back inside with a smile. Wybie actually liked me back!
