my family was becoming more and more distant from me. they never looked at me the way they used to. it scared me beyond measure. i kept trying to overcome that invisible force holding me back, but no matter what i tried, nothing could change the way things were. everyday, i would try something new, doing nice things for them like cleaning my room, but even that was like a war between my sanity and my heart. i thought back to what my parents were like after Ian had left us. they acted like he had died, and in a way he had, he was was different when he left. not..........normal. they had become distant like they were now. i knew they felt that he had already taken me, and he had, at least my personality anyways.i felt helpless, worthless, but most of all, i felt like a puppet, being controlled by Alex and his personal world. i wondered how many kids he had changed or taken, just like Ian and me. i pictured kids, lined up in wait for their war uniforms. no expressians, just blank, empty faces. i wondered what thier families felt : loss, guilt, grief, or were they proud and happy for their children because they have a different opinion then my family. my mind was racing with thousands of unanswered questions. then knock on my door slapped me back into reality.
"Who is it?" i asked the door.
"It's mom. We need to talk." she said, her voice sounded guilty.
"I couldn't agree more." i responded quietly. i walked over to the door. about to turn the knob when i stopped. what did she do that makes her sound so guilty i wondered. my mother could never to anything to hurt someone or cause any problems.....could she? i opened the door anyways, curiousity taking over. she and I sat on my fluffy purple bed, facing the wall.
"I have been thinking... my mom started. "That maybe you should be going out with friends or do something fun. i don't want you to miss out on childhood, just because we have a little family drama, right?" she smiled.
i smiled back.
"Mom" i begin. "I want to do more things with you and dad, but i don't think i will let myself." i said. she looked at my, her brow furrowed.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
" This sounds crazy, but i think somehow, Alex changed me. i can't explain it, but whenever i try to, the words are forced down my throat and stay there, never coming out. when i act mean and different then usual, it''s because something is forcing me to say it. i can't do what i want. it's like something inside my head is being controlled by him, and i know it's Alex. i can feel it." i said to my mom. she listened to my every word, slowly gathering what i was saying. i saw a look of horror and defeat wash over her face.
"John, get in here. now."
i could hear the desperation and concern in her voice. and he could too. "What is it, is Saturn OK?" he asked, barging into the room.
"It's happened." my mother said, defeated.
"What's happened.?" he asked.
"Alex has gotten into Saturn's mind. he is slowly doing the same thing to her as he was to Ian. but she is different. it's almost as if she can resist it, and not be totally controlled. she can still make her own descions, but something is holdng her back. its remarkable and sad at the same time." she said, tears welling up in her eyes. i took over, better explaining what my mother had summarized. slowly, realization filled my father's face.
"I see." he said. "Well there is someone who can help us, but i fear he is already too far gone." my father said, worry thickening his voice.
"Who are you talking about?" i asked him.
"He goes by the name of Fortune. but his real name is Harold Fortune. he is an old friend of mine, who is going through quite the same thing you are, darling." he replied.
"Well what can he do to help me?" i asked, impatiently.
"I think he can figure out a way for you to get out of this "force". he has the same ability that you do, he can resist it. he has actually learned how to get rid of it for good. i think he would take great interest in you Saturn." he complimented.
i blushed.
"When can i meet him?" i demanded.
"Tommorow if you like." he said. i turned to my mother. she nodded. i could tell she was against this, but it was her only chance at getting me back.
"I won't let him take over me." i told my mother. i grabbed her hand. "I promise you that." i will do everything in my power to stop him from taking me and anyother child. i will form a group, and rise against everything he stands for, everything he works for, and force it to leave this world, and never come back. i talked over the idea in my head. i was set on one plan, and that's what kept me going until i could see Harold. i won't give up. i told myself. i can't. not with mom and dad already losing Ian, i couldn't bear to think about what would happen to them if they lost me too.
i walked up the stairs to my room, collapsing onto my bed. i was so tired, but i couldn't shake what was happening from my mind. what is the Fortune going to be like? i picture him as old, wrinkles covering his face. his skin is old and weathered, yet his eyes sparkle with youth. i fell asleep dreaming of my incounter with him.
"What is it you seek?" he asked. his voice was filled with wisdom and emotion. it seemed alien coming from such a withered body. it surprised me.
"I seek the answer of releasing myself from Alex Hamilton's mind." i answered him.
"Is that all?" he asked.
"No." i replied. i felt like he alreadt knew everything about me, that he knew what i really wanted from him, and from myself. "I want to know how to defeat Alex Hamilton." i said.
the man laughed. he had a booming laugh that filled the room.
"And why is that so funny?" i asked.
"You are joking no?" he demanded.
"No. i am most certainly not joking. he has ruined my family for far too long, and i will not take it anymore. i cannot bear to think about the other families he will ruin in his path to total power." i snapped.
he stopped laughing. "I see. Very well. But who will help you? How do you plan on destroyiong the all powerful Alex?" he smiled. "
With your help." i said.
"I will help you as much as i can, but not until i can see you for real." he said. he waved his hand, and that world disappeared. i sat up in bed.
"Let's go meet the Fortune." i said aloud.
