I stared daggers at the receptionist of the mental hospital. My arms crossed in defiance.
"This is outrageous. First you move his room, then you forbid me from seeing him?" my voice raising with every word.
"I'm sorry Ms.Sparks, there is nothing I can do." the women replied. But there was no sympathy in her eyes. Just coldness.
"What genius thought of that?" I snapped, my eyes rolling in annoyance.
"Alex Hamilton." she deadpanned.
I cringed internally at the sound of his name. Such a nice name for such an evil man.
"Of course." I mumbled.
An obnoxious ring tone filled the air, making my bad mood even worse. I was about to complain, then I realized that it was my phone. Blushing fiercely at my own stupidity, I answered the call.
"Janey, can't this wait until I get home?" I questioned with a sigh.
"Well I just thought that you would like to know that you won't be seeing Janey for a while." a husky male voice came through the phone. My heart beat faster, and my palms began to sweat.
"Daniel." I growled.
"You haven't forgotten me?" he faked a happy tone.
But I couldn't forget him. No matter how hard I tried, his face was burned into my head, like so many other bad memories.
"What do you want?" my voice quivered, tears prickling the edges of my eyes.
"A second chance." he whispered.
I could hear the sorrow in his words, but I wouldn't fall for that again. That voice had lured me in, only to shun me out in the end. I remembered a saying, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." How ironic, there is always a quote that defines your current situation. But I wouldn't let him betray me again. I thought over his words. A second chance. No way. But if I was right, he would bring Janey along.
"Fine. 6:00, the seaside restaurant where we first met." I instructed, hanging up the phone before he could reply. I had a plan. But I would need help from someone special...my father.

After some foul language and a few threats, I was let into my dad's room. White walls, white sheets, and white curtains. Everything was white. And for the millionth time, I felt bad for him. If only mom hadn't died, maybe things would be different. Maybe if mom hadn't died, Janey would be in my arms, and not Daniel's. But it wasn't her fault. She had done everything she could. Now, I will do everything I can to get Janey back.
"It's Janey isn't it?" a voice whispered. A voice I had been waiting for years to hear.
"Yeah." I whispered back. I stress fully ran my fingers through my hair, and blew air out through my cheeks.
"Your mother used to do that." he added, turning to face me.
I looked up in surprise. The second sentence he choose to say after two years in a mental hospital from the death of my mom, and he choose to bring her up. That was the last thing I was expecting. I gave him a weak smile.
"Daniel." he confessed. "Daniel took her."
I ignored the fact that he practially read my mind, he was always that way. All I could think about was what Daniel did to me.
"Yeah." I gritted my teeth to keep from crying.
"It's OK to cry Hope." he said, looking me in the eyes.
"Mom never cried. So why should I?" I whispered.
"Because your strong." he replied.
I looked up at him confused. I was about to ask him what he meant when he continued.
"I know. Not much of any answer. But it's true. Only someone strong can cry in front of others. Anyone can hold it together, but it takes true courage to cry." he added.
But that didn't stop me from breaking down. Right then and there.
I wrapped my arms around myself, gut-wrenching sobs coursing through my body. Another set of arms wrapped around me, and I returned the favor. He rested his head on mine, whispering three little words over and over. "Let it out. Let it out. Let it out." I cried even harder. My mom used to say that every time I came home, eyes puffy, nose running.
"I know it hurts. I know." he explained. I felt his own tears drip on to my head, resting on my hair. Finally, I could share the pain with someone. Someone who understands. Someone who knows what it feels like to lose yourself. I thought that he was gone. I thought I would never see the real him again. But I was wrong. My father did come back, as if nothing had happened. As if his long period of silence had only been for a moment. But it did't matter anymore. Nothing mattered besides Janey and my father.

"Are you sure your ready for this?" he demanded, hands planted firmly on each shoulder, eyes staring into mine.
"Yeah. I'm ready." I nodded.
Our plan was to hit Daniel at his weakest point. At his most vulnerable. And I knew just how to do it. Daniel was my ex-boyfriend. Daniel put on this good boy mask, fooling me into thinking I could trust him. But whenever we were alone, he ripped off that mask and showed his true colors. Angry, abusive, arrogant. Pushy, pathetic, and psychotic. Everything I was hoping he wouldn't be. He hit me, then apologized, then hit me again. So I ended it. I got a restraining order, he got put in jail, and anything we had was gone and forgotten.
Until he called me, and took my sister. And he had the nerve to ask for a second chance. But I had to do it. For Janey.
Hands in pockets, feet nervously moving back and forth, I waited for Daniel to show up. If I still knew him, he would bring Janey. Two sets of footsteps confirmed that, and I saw Janey step out if an alley, Daniel pinning her arm behind her back with a satisfied smirk.
"Well, well, well. Look who we have here." he smiled mockingly. "Finally decided you couldn't resist me?"
"Yeah, and it only took you abducting my sister." I replied, sarcasm stitched into every word.
"Clever." he glared.
Judging by his look, I couldn't afford another insult if I wanted this to to work. Too bad. I've been working on my comebacks lately. I could've had some fun with this.
