They are made into weapons, only to be used to kill all beings labeled monsters by the ones who turned them into this. They finally chose to break free from their chains when they were ordered to assassinate the Daughter of the Yokai factions leader, Yasaka. The reader signaled his brothers and they killed the priest that had been sent with them with great ease.
