Rachel loved savagery.
She had developed a sick and demented fascination about it when she had turned seventeen and had been with her brother Caleb who was twelve. Both siblings had sneaked out the back door of their two-bedroom family home during a cold November night.
Caleb had been bored on that day, and Rachel was raring to go for some action. She had found a butcher knife hidden underneath her father's bed one morning while she was snooping around.
Dad was not home for most of the days and weeks because of the long hours spent working at the plant. Mother was ill for the moment, and she needed the kids to take after her. She was stuck in her bed upstairs, leaving the siblings free to do as they'd wished.
Rachel was the first to leave the front door. She held the butcher knife in the right pocket of her winter jacket. Caleb tagged along because he didn't want to be left alone with their ill mother, held a small cardboard box.
"Where are we taking this, Rachel?" Caleb asked as the two siblings entered a car.
"Just shut up, alright?" Rachel said. "We are going to the park."
"So, what's at the park?" Caleb asked.
He was suddenly wide-eyed and excited. He hadn't been out with his sister in a while since Caleb was out of town for his schooling. Caleb was staying home for just the week. Rachel adored her brother and always wanted to spend time with him.
"You'll see," said she said. "I think you will like it."
"Are we going to hid something there?"
"Yeah little bro, we are."
"What is it was hiding?"
"Caleb, I know you're my little brother, but if you ask me another question again, I'll cut your fucking cords off."
"Okay," Caleb said lightly.
Rachel stopped the car, and they got out. She patted Caleb on the shoulder, "I'm sorry I said that to you. I won't do that again."
Caleb shrugged.
"Thanks," he said. "You're a fucking pig of a cunt!"
Rachel was impressed.
"You've been learning the foul language all of a sudden?" she asked with surprise.
Rachel was pleased. The siblings walked alongside a dirt road. Up ahead was a parked police vehicle. Two men, dressed in dark gray police coats and armed with long-range rifles, pulled, just as the siblings approached their car. One of them recognized Rachel.
"That's Roy's daughter," he said to his partner on the left.
His partner Dale said, "Gee, I didn't know he could make such a pretty girl."
Caleb and Rosalyn stopped. Dale said to Caleb, "What's your name, son?"
"My name is Caleb," Caleb replied. "This is my older sister Rosalyn. I'm sure she knows you."
Rachel quickly chimed in, "He's my brother alright. I haven't seen him in a while. We were going up the ways to the park. I thought I'd introduce him to you guys."
Caleb was stunned. Rosie spoke with the confidence of a sergeant. Both armed men seemed impressed by her delivery. One of them stepped aside and nodded happily at her.
Caleb went ahead first, and Rachel followed him. The two siblings were living on the north side of Aignéis County, the large border town that was separated by a river.
The siblings picked up their pace as they continued towards the park. Caleb had noticed the butcher knife back home when he saw his sister sneak it into his jacket.
