Four hours later a man named Sawyer was perched inside a Suburban across from the complex that Rachel lived in.
He delved into his glove compartment and grabbed a satellite phone. His boss O'Connor was from Boston and spoke to Sawyer from the other end of the line.
"She's gone, boss," Sawyer said to him. "She dipped and ran. I know she has the money."
"I see," O'Connor said. "Does she know we have a tail on her?"
Sawyer gave a thought. "I highly doubt it, given that she's gotten rid of that loser of her's, her brother, and the cop's wife."
"What about the Chief, is he still involved?"
"No," Sawyer replied. "He's done for. I took care of him just an hour ago. He's sleeping with the fishes as the Italians would say."
"Good," O'Connor said. "Those brothers – Phil and Grant – they were good business for us. Now that cunt Rachel ruined it for us."
Sawyer agreed. "That's why I suggest we pull all our people in and track her down."
"Where do ou think she could be?"
Sawyer gave another thought. He said, "I have source who said he said someone matching Rachel's appearance at the border. That seems to be her next move."
"Wait...the bitch is trying to get across the border?"
"Yeah, apparently," Sawyer said. "No worries, boss. I'll have my people on it. She won't get far, I guarantee."
"All right," said O'Connor. "I'll be waiting. Keep me advised about your whereabouts."
Sawyer placed the phone back in the compartment.
He looked out his side window and stared at the building.
Rachel Gardner was running with O'Connor's money. It was time for the bitch to pay the Piper. The former call-girl wasn't known for being the type who'd always fly off the handle.
She had been away for several months. For Sawyer, it was several months too long and several months' worth of O'Connor's money going down the drain.
Sawyer turned the ignition. He calmly pressed on the brakes and drove east. In about a half hour the henceman would get on the I-23 to Boston.
He would go back to his nest to round up the boys.
