Alice stood in the Red Queen's courtyard, painting the white roses red. She was to correct the Queen's cardlike henchman's mistake. Somehow, they had gotten confused with the colours of red and white when the Queen had specifically asked for red roses. The Bloody Red Queen, as Hatter called her, made Alice paint them.
This was to be Alice's punishment for trespassing and it was also payment, for the Queen had spared her from drowning or worse, being eaten. When the girl was about to be drowned or if not, eaten the Red Queen ordered one of her guards to save her and bring her back to the castle where she received a fresh change of clothes since her previous ones were soaked.
The little girl being afraid of what the Queen might do, did as she was told, for she was afraid that if she disobeyed the Red Queen, she'd surely be killed. Or would she? Was this not a dream? She continued to paint the flowers red as the Queen had ordered her to, using the silver bucket of red paint or at least she thought it was red paint, the Red Queen had provided her with.

After finishing painting the white roses red, the Red Queen was overjoyed with what the little girl had done. She allowed Alice safe passage back home for helping her and not disobeying her like so many others had done before.
Alice happy, she had finally escaped the madness that day left Wonderland however, she was too young to realise that she was not painting the roses with paint. She was painting the roses with that of the King's blood.
