Prompt: maybe one of them gets back from a quest and the other is just so relieved.
---
Anubis stared at the date on the calendar in worry. Nico had been gone for more than two weeks now.
The demigod had been sent on a quest that was supposed to be easy, he should've been back many days ago. Anubis had made a point of visiting Camp Half-Blood very day for the last five days. Chiron was no help, he had no idea where Nico was in his quest.
"Anubis," Chiron spoke up beside him. "He will return sooner or later, I'm sure he is still alive."
The Egyptian frowned at the ground, chewing on his bottom lip, "He wouldn't die on me." He twisted his fingers anxiously, muttering more to himself than any other, "He wouldn't leave me behind."
Chiron's hooves clacked on the floor next to him where he sat at the stairs of the Big House. The centaur shrunk down into his wheelchair. He pulled a low table out between them, "Care for a game of chess to pass the time. You seem like you need to take you mind off things."
Anubis thought the offer over, he really could use some distraction right about now. He straightened and saw Chiron smile as he set up the game for them.
The god was usually a highly talented in chess, but this time he found his thoughts drifting. He saw his opponent's moves, but could not counter them as usual, his mind constantly filled with visuals of Nico's lifeless body. He could see the son of Hades' eyes staring blankly into the sky, blood pooling in the corner of his mouth, a sword sticking out of his abdomen.
"Anubis?" Chiron spoke up.
Anubis looked up at him. The look in the old teacher's eyes showed evident worry for him.
"Your expression makes it look like you really do think that Nico is gone."
The god felt his eyes widen, noticing the frown on his face, his tight lips turned down in a pained grimace. He averted his gaze, "I apologize for my behaviour."
Chiron placed a hand on his shoulder, Anubis looked up into the man's kind eyes. "You should not apologize for feeling the way you feel about Nico."
Anubis smiled and felt his chest tighten at the words, "Thank you. There are few people that share the same sentiment."
Chiron opened his mouth to say something, when Anubis suddenly sensed someone. He glanced around and spotted a darkening spot in the treeline. He rose quickly and squinted at the trees. He jolted forwards into a sprint as Nico stumbled out of the darkness, the shadows clinging to his shoulders in long, black tendrils. Anubis reached him a second after and pulled him out from the shadows, he frowned at the darkness, it seemed like it was trying to pull Nico back into the shadows. He growled and gripped Nico's leather jacket, his feet digging into the ground. He felt his jaw clench with effort as he successfully pulled his partner to safety.
Nico groaned softly in his arms, his hands gripping the god weakly, "Hey there, handsome." He coughed and Anubis felt his teeth grit in anger as he saw some blood on his bottom lip.
"Be quiet," Anubis said, picking the demigod up bridal style. He started towards the Big House, keeping Nico close to his body. He had spotted a dark, red stain forming on the other's shirt covering his stomach, the sight twisting his insides with worry.
Anubis looked up as he was walking. Chiron had returned to his centaur form, holding the door to the house open as they got closer. He ushered them inside, and Anubis placed Nico gently down on a bed in the foyer.
The demigod's breathing was ragged, his eyebrows twitching with each intake. Anubis lifted the boy's shirt and saw the stab wound in his abdomen. He sucked in a breath at the sight, removing his shirt to press it against the opening to stop the bleeding. Nico grunted in pain, his hand gripping the god's wrist.
"Move!" A voice barked behind Anubis, and he jerked sideways. He looked back and spotted Will Solace shoving past him. He moved out of the way, reluctantly removing his hands from Nico.
Will kneeled to sit near Nico, removing Anubis' shirt and cutting open the son of Hades' t-shirt. He inspected the wound and Anubis could hear him swear in ancient Greek under his breath. He wiped the blood away with a crisp white cloth, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration. The Egyptian could only watch on, helpless.
Will started a hymn to Apollo and Anubis stared in fascination as the wound started to close. It was still a shocking red and irritated skin, but Will breathed a sigh of relief and started bandaging Nico's midsection. He placed a few pillows under the Italian's back as he made him sit up.
"Eat this," Will said, pushing a chunk of ambrosia into Nico's mouth. The son of Hades frowned as he chewed and finally swallowed.
"Drink this," Will said, holding up a glass of nectar with a straw in it. Nico glared, but took the glass nonetheless, sipping it reluctantly.
Anubis breathed out, suddenly realising he had been holding his breath during the entire ordeal. Nico turned his head to look at him, and his eyes softened, "Hey there, handsome."
The god rolled his eyes but smiled at his lover, "You already said that." He heaved a ragged breath and leaned forward to wrap his arms carefully around Nico's shoulders. He buried his face in the demigod's neck.
He felt Nico's hand stroke his hair, "What's wrong, mio amore?"
Anubis tightened his grip subconsciously, "Don't do that to me ever again."
Nico pulled the god's head up to look him in the eyes, "Do what?"
"You were gone for so long and then you were stabbed when you returned," Anubis started.
"He's been waiting for you every day for five days now," Will suddenly said beside them. Anubis scowled at him, embarrassed.
The son of Apollo winked at him and dragged Chiron out of the room.
"You waited for me?" Nico spoke up.
"I was worried," Anubis replied. His hand grasping Nico's fingers.
"I was fine, though."
The god tightened his grip at grit his teeth, "You were not okay, Nico!"
Nico started at his outburst. He lifted his hand and cupped Anubis' cheek, his eyes warm, "Calm down, Anubis. I'm totally fine, I promise. Now put those glowing eyes away."
The god blinked, he hadn't noticed his eyes glowing gold. It happened sometimes when he was angry. He sighed and nuzzled Nico's nose, seeing a tiny smile spread on the other's face.
Anubis leaned closer and pressed their lips together in a soft kiss. He felt Nico's hand travel into his hair, grasping strands softly. Anubis tilted his head and pushed closer, moving his lips against his partner's. He felt a stupid grin form on his mouth and found it difficult to continue his ministrations. He chuckled as Nico was forced to kiss his teeth.
"What're you laughing at?" Nico asked, annoyed. "I can't kiss you properly like this."
Anubis didn't bother answering, he simply buried his head in Nico's chest, giggling.
