Anubis hadn't felt more alive in his life. He finally felt the hope of meeting his soulmate.
Was this how they all felt? Giddy and restless all the time. He thought of Nico (he had told him his name as well) every time he closed his eyes. The words they had exchanged circled in his head constantly. When he was fulfilling his duty of leading the dead through the Duat to the Hall of Judgement, he was playing their conversations over and over again in his mind.
Isis had noticed his behaviour and had decided to confront him about it.
He told her the truth. She was ecstatic, to say the least. She all but jumped up and down, squealing with joy.
"Have you met them yet?" she asked, grasping his hand in hers.
Anubis shook his head.
Her eyes softened, "Oh, sweetie. I'm sure you'll meet them soon."
—-
Anubis sat down on his bed. He grabbed his brush and dipped it in ink. He wrote a quick message.
'Are you there?'
He only had to wait a few seconds.
'Yeah.'
He couldn't help feeling relieved every time he saw those scribbled lines. He had gone too long without answers before so he was still worried he wouldn't get an answer.
'What are you up to?' He wrote.
'Playing some Mythomagic with my friends. You?'
'Writing to you.'
'You're kidding... I didn't notice.'
Anubis smiled at the snarky remark. A thought crossed his mind, and he bit his lip in thought. Should he ask to meet him?
He wrote it quickly before he could rethink it. As soon as he'd written, he regretted it. But now it was too late.
He put the brush down and prepared for the worst.
When he looked down, there was an answer written on his arm.
'Yes. When?'
Anubis couldn't help but smile.
'As soon as possible.'
'Saturday? I know this great graveyard.'
The lord of Funerals smiled.
'Okay.'
—-
Anubis was very nervous.
He had travelled to the graveyard through the Duat, and was now sat at a forlorn bench. He had brought a rose. Why had he brought a rose? Nico would probably think he was stupid.
It was dark outside, as they'd agreed. The graveyard was empty, but for a few doves roosting in a tree nearby.
Anubis has arrived earlier than he was supposed to. Would Nico like that, or would he seem desperate? Well, he was desperate! He had been waiting for this moment for five thousand years, goddammit, he had a right to be a little desperate.
A noise to his left made him look up. He squinted to see in the darkness. A couple of meters away, he could spot some swirling shadows in between some trees. They seemed to gather around a certain spot, forming a dark figure. As the person walked forward, the shadows hung from their shoulders in black tendrils, hitting the ground and dispersing like smoke.
Anubis felt his mouth drop open at the sight of his soulmate. Nico wore tight-fitting black trousers, with a t-shirt and an aviator jacket. He had a black sword strapped to his hip, the Stygian iron thrumming with dark energy.
Anubis could feel his essence resonate as he rose to approach. He took one step forward and opened his mouth to speak.
He stopped in his tracks. Why couldn't he move anymore? His mouth was open, but he couldn't make any sound come out.
Nico's eyes turned worried as he walked towards him.
"Anubis?" Oh, his voice. Anubis still couldn't move.
"Are you okay?"
Anubis felt like he was gaping like a fish.
Nico had made his way over to him, and oh, his eyes, Anubis could drown in those eyes.
He felt hands cradle his own, and he noticed that he was shaking. He felt like his legs were buckling underneath him, but he was still standing, somehow.
"I think your rose is dead, Anubis," Nico said.
The god glanced down and noticed that the rose was slowly turning to dust in his hands.
"Oh, sorry. It was meant for you." His voice seemed to be working now.
Nico smiled.
Anubis raised an eyebrow, "What?"
"Nothing, it's really sweet. And your voice is really nice." The demigod didn't seem to notice what he was saying, and suddenly blushed. "Gods, that sounded cheesy."
Anubis laughed hoarsely, and noticed how his throat was tight, and his eyes burned. He heaved a shuddering breath, and gripped Nico's hands.
"I can't believe that you're actually here. You are really here, right?"
Nico nodded, "Yeah, I'm here."
Anubis moved one hand up to touch the other's cheek. It was warm. He really was there.
The Egyptian felt his eyes fill with tears as he moved his shaking arms to hug Nico.
"I've been waiting 5000 years for this."
He felt the demigod's arms embrace him, "I hope I was worth the wait."
