"Who put this soundbyte together? Sounds like samples from a slasher flick." John laughed, but Dawn didn't join in.
He turned in his seat. "Dawn?"
Something moved amongst the dark cubicles in the main office.
"Hide and seek, huh?" he called playfully.
He stalked out into the aisle where he'd seen movement. The outside door in the kitchen closed with a loud click.
"Dawn?" he called, concerned now.
Quickly crossing the office he pushed open the door and looked out in the dark alley.
Into the flickering light of the lone alley bulb stepped a man with long greasy hair and a hand over Dawn's mouth.
She whimpered, and screamed his name.
The man smiled, exposing large yellow teeth, and said in a gravelly voice, "How about we make a better sample?"
John gripped the doorframe tightly when the man drew a large Bowie knife from his belt.
"We only get one take. Better make it count."
With a wicked smile, the man raised the knife and said, "Ready or not, here we go!"
"No!" John yelled as the knife plunged home. Dawn's scream turned into a gurgle.
Too late. Always too late.
