The sound of her heels clicked all through the journey down the highly compacted halls of the county prison.
By Harper's side was a prison guard, clothed in a light striped blue button-down shirt and a pair of black trousers. Shoes as black as sin covered his very large feet, and he towered over her as they both made their way over to the visitation room.
All through her trip earlier this morning and at the present moment, Harper felt anxious. She kept wondering what her sister would think when she saw her. She knew Therese would be angry; she did play a hand in her incarceration after all and that she knew would never be disregarded by her.
But what she did was for her sister's own good. Sure she might have to spend most of what was left of her youth behind bars but at least she would be guaranteed to live, unlike living the risky life she enjoyed outside of this godforsaken place.
Harper's eyes searched around after she and the guard had come into a large room. It was bleak—beige coloured paint coated the walls.
Strategically placed metal desks and chairs were packed inside and by them were a few people.
The female prisoners sat at each table were dressed in the prison's uniform; grey sweaters and trousers.
Most of the women there looked very young and it made her heart sank just thinking about what they had gotten themselves into.
Flashes of her own sister came to mind and the thought that she'd never visited any prison for anyone before, and probably never would again plague her mind, yet there she was visiting her, the narcissistic and unreasonable Therese who would never consider wasting a single breath on her, however there she was still being nice and dropping by.
The guard had shown her to a table where she sat, crossing her legs waiting patiently. Harper noticed she was given a few glances by some of the inmates and it made her self-conscious and nervous. She started trailing her hands through her hair nervously doing her best to avoid any eye contact with the women.
It worked because she started to feel relaxed and at peace, the feeling didn't last forever though. The moment Harper saw Therese being led by another guard, she swallowed hard.
From the distance, she eyed as she walked with a slight limp to her usual elegant chip. Memories of Ryn firing the gun towards her rang out like a bell in her kind and she almost didn't notice when Therese had taken a seat.
"Came to see me suffer, right?"
Therese's question startled her and she snapped back into reality. Her eyes ran all over her sister and a dissatisfied frown graced her face.
Therese looked tired. There were dark circles under her eyes and her face was stripped of its usual makeup.
She was dressed very poorly in the prison wear and she knew it was far from her sister's taste.
She continued to eye Therese and her skin looked pale, just like hers Harper thought and couldn't help but feel sorry for what she was going through.
"I'm sorry but I didn't come here for that."
"What are you here for, to brag about this with Harge?"
"No, no. I came here because I wanted to see you, to make sure that you were. okay." Harper said the latter quietly.
As a response, Therese chuckled.
"You're concerned now, that's sweet. Where was this sweetness when you were busy hiring someone to shoot me in the leg, baby sis?" She scowled.
"Look, I did not expect her to shoot you but if you want my honest opinion it was only fair, you shot her first."
"Yeah only because she shot at me first. Now, forget all that. Why even are you here?"
Harper frowned at her sister's harsh tone and fiddled with her thumbs as a distraction from the tension.
