Chapter 10 My Fellow Regulator and brother Chavez

I lay in bed fighting the sickness and fever I wake up screaming from a nightmare about my stepfather beating me. In the dream he kills me. I sit up in bed crying and upset. Chavez holds me trying comfort me and calm me down my heart is racing and beating faster and faster. I sit there crying while Chavez holds me calming me down. And when I was sitting on the front porch Chavez came out there and sat on the porch with me. Chavez is like an older brother to me. We are very close we became close when John took me in and brought me here to his ranch. Charley came and brought me soup but it was really bad because Charley can not cook I told him that didn't want it. He tried to make me eat his soup I got mad at him and I took the bowl of soup and poured it on his head and told him to leave me alone. I could see by the look on Chavez's face that he was very upset with Charley. And while Chavez is dealing with Charley I run to the outhouse and throw up. Chavez comes back to find me gone and he gets worried about me. Doc tells Chavez that I am in the outhouse throwing up. I come out of the outhouse and sit on the front porch shaking Chavez comes out on the front porch and puts a blanket around me and holds me to calm me down. He feels my forehead and feels that I am burning up with fever he helps me back inside and back to bed. But I stay awake because of the nightmares and Chavez tells me that I am going to be alright he isn't going to let anything happen to me. For the first time in my life since my mother had died of T.B. I have a family who cares about me. Who cares if I live or die. I know that Chavez cares about me a lot because we are like brothers.
