prologue: rivals from birth

In Hongdae Hospital, two moms in adjacent beds are giving birth to a boy and a girl, respectively. Unbeknownst to the nurses and doctors, the moms are having a competition between each other. 

My son should be born first!

No way will I let a boy get ahead of my girl!

At exactly 7:04pm, Kim Jisoo was born, followed by Kim Bobby after 5 seconds. 

"It's a boy!"

"It's a girl!"

In between their panting, the moms cast side glares at each other.

2 YEARS LATER...

"My little Bobby spoke his first today!" Mrs. Kim announced as she dashed outside her house, making sure her voice was loud enough to be heard by her neighbor, Mrs. Single Kim. 

Her neighbors are congratulating her. "What did he say?" they asked. 

"He said 'mama'!"

As if on cue, Bobby said Mama.

"AWWWW" the neighbors said.

Mrs. Single Kim was watching from her bedroom window. 

"All right, Jisoo," she turned to her 2-year-old who was sitting in the crib, "Can you say, mama? Mama?"

Jisoo stared at her blankly and cooed. 

Mrs. Single Kim smiled and kissed her daughter's forehead. "Mama?"

Jisoo blinked at her. 

"I guess not today, huh." Mrs. Single Kim started cleaning up the room. 

"Gimbap," a faint sound whispered. 

Mrs. Single Kim turned to her daughter. "What was that?"

"Gim...bap," Jisoo said again. 

Her mom cried in joy and picked up her daughter. "Did you say gimbap?"

Jisoo smiled a toothless smile. "Gimbap," she repeated.

Mrs. Single Kim opened the door to her balcony and shouted from above. "My daughter spoke her first word: gimbap!"

"Gimbap," Jisoo repeated. 

She gave a knowing look at Mrs. Kim, who was now out of an audience. 

AS TIME GOES ON...

Jisoo's and Bobby's mom would always encourage them to do their best. They would enter them into every competition they can enter, and would always brag about the winner. 

In nursery, Jisoo graduated top of the class. 

In kindergarten, Bobby graduated top of the class.

In preparatory, Jisoo graduated top of the class.

In 1st grade, Bobby finished top of the class.

In 2nd grade, Jisoo finished top of the class. 

And so on, and so forth. 

It's not only in academics. Since they were brilliant students, the teachers would enter them in different competitions. 

In 3rd grade, Jisoo became a champion in a cooking contest.

In 3rd grade, Bobby won an art contest. 

In 4th grade, Jisoo won a national Math quiz bee. 

In 4th grade, Bobby won a national Science quiz bee.
