ACT ONE

EXT. - IRATI FOREST, PROVINCE OF NAVARRA/NAFARROA, KINGDOM OF SPAIN – DAWN MORNING – AD 1493

The scene FADES IN onto an animated view of a medieval Basque forest landscape with a sunless rose-pink clear sky in THIRD PERSON VIEW. We are on top of a hill that overlooks a valley of mixed beech, birch and silver fir trees and the Irati River, which we do not see yet. We see the ruins of a small castle resting on top of a large hill to the left and an old birch tree close by to the right.

As seconds passes by, the sun slowly rises into the sky.

EXT. - SUNRISE MORNING

After the sun makes its way above the horizon, a SMALL BLACK FINCH with a sharp beak flies and ENTERS our view and rests on the branch of the old birch tree. It chirps as it stares into the distance and gazes at the sunrising sky.

Seconds later...the black finch suddenly turns its head and quickly takes off right when a LARGE SHADOW ENTERS our view, swoops by and tries to grab the small bird. SWOOSH! The large shadow reveals itself to be a RED KITE HAWK. The Red Kite chases the small black finch. They swirl around in the air until they fly out and EXIT our view. At that moment, we hear the voice of a TEENAGE GIRL with a French/Basque accent.

TEENAGE GIRL'S VOICE (O.S.)

Gorri! Father, he flew over there! Come, quickly!

A light, olive skin tone Basque girl runs and ENTERS our view. She is thin, has chestnut brown hair with a Simonetta Vespucci-inspired hairstyle and long bangs, is wearing a necklace that bears a rose crest of her family's Coat of Arms and has a green poncho cloak over her purple Bunad dress, which has been passed down to her from her Basque mother's Norman ancestors. She has a falconry glove on her left hand.

This is AINHOA DE RAIDO, the determined and strong-willed eldest daughter of the De Raido Family. She observes her pet Red Kite, Gorri, chasing the small black bird in the far distance.

She turns to face us. The sunlight illuminates her light eyes.

AINHOA

Hurry, Father!

Seconds later, a MIDDLE AGE MAN with an olive skin tone runs and ENTERS our view. He stops to bend over and catch his breath. He is tall, built, has an undercut hairstyle with gray patches all over his chestnut brown hair, including on his Van Dyke beard, he wears the same necklace as Ainhoa and is wearing a red and black brigandine over a red doublet and dark breeches. A crossbow is attached to a strap on his back. He drops a leather quiver of arrows and rests his hands around his waist and crouches down. This is the kind and fatherly protective MARCRUSIO DE RAIDO, the father of the De Raido Family. He speaks with a Castilian accent.
