Lisa pulled her navy peacoat tighter to her body as she rang the doorbell of the mansion. Hidden away in the English countryside sat a sprawling beige mansion with large windows and a courtyard. Emerald grass carpeted the land and was lined in shrubberies, painting the picture of idealistic home fit for a queen. Considering it was Jisoo's family's English manor, a queen was exactly who was inside.
Only the queen has been silent for two weeks since she had come to visit her mother and father, and it worried Lisa endlessly. So, as soon as she was able, the Thailander got an advance on her university assignments and took a two-week vacation from work. Together, her two best friends arranged a surprise for their oldest buddy, landing Lisa at the front door.
The ominous grey sky rumbled above her head as she waited for someone to open the door. The feeling of dread ate at her stomach as the minutes dragged on. Finally, after ringing the bell several times, the door was opened by Mr. Jeon, Jisoo's childhood caretaker. "Lisa," he asked in disbelief. She was the last person he ever expected to see standing on the doorstep, and the last person he wanted to see.
His chest ached as she smiled brightly at him. "Mr. Jeon! It's so nice to see you again. I came here to surprise Jisoo," she said as she stepped inside the front hall. "Where is she, I'm anxious to see her." Mr. Jeon's age weathered face crinkled even more as he looked to his feet, something the distinguished elder never did.
"She's in the last room on in the east wing. I'll show you," he said quietly. Lisa's hands trembled slightly as she followed the man's slow footsteps to the last door of a hallway, deep in the interior of the manor. "She's in there," he murmured as he gestured to the shadowy door. "And please," he told Lisa. "Remember everything she's told you before. Those words will speak louder than the ones she says now."
Although she was confused, Lisa unhurriedly padded to the door. She didn't hear anything from inside, so she pushed the door open to find Jisoo laying on an emerald comforter. The raven-haired beauty stared blankly at the ceiling with her hands folded under her head. "Chichu," Lisa sang as she bounced over to the bed while she tried to bury her fear. "Surprise! I came to see you!"
Jisoo's eyes grew huge as she sat straight up on her bed. "Lisa! Why are you here?" Her black pants and brown peasant blouse with teal and magenta patterns brought a small amount of color to the dark room. Everything about the space was neutral or muted: the carpet was off white while the walls were pale grey, the bed a deep emerald. All the bright colors from her apartment at home seemed to have been sucked away in the dreary countryside. Jisoo herself seemed to be lackluster with an unusual pallor and dull eyes.
Something was very wrong. Lisa tried to ignore it and smiled through the panic before going to unbutton her coat. The look on Jisoo's face made her lower her hands to her sides. She had the feeling like it would be a short visit. "To see you of course! You haven't called or texted me in weeks. I was afraid you were sick or hurt, so I came to see you."
"You shouldn't have," Jisoo said coldly. She stood up and started for the door with a frown on her face. "You need to leave, right now and go home. Don't come back or try to contact me."
"Why not," Lisa asked quietly. "Did I make you angry?" Jisoo closed her eyes and took a deep breath before looking at the shaking girl.
"Lisa, we need to break up." Just like that, Lisa's heart stopped cold in its place. Breathing became hard as she struggled not to gasp as Jisoo stared at her ex's collarbone in stony silence.
"What did I do," she asked in a small, almost childlike voice. Jisoo's heart craked at the sound of Lisa's broken tone. She wanted nothing more than to grab Lisa's hand and run out the front door and disappear into the world where her parents would never find her. Its what she wanted, but she had a responsibility to her family and their business.
