Chapter 1 - Thoughts

I had been spending all of my life living a lie. A string of girlfriends had enabled me to keep up appearances, but in reality I was so sad.

What made this more difficult, was the fact that I was crushing on one of my best friends, Cyrus Goodman. I don't remember anyone else catching my attention like him.

It was a major thing for me to deal with, and I wasn't ready for the inevitable backlash that certain students would give me.

Every lunchtime I would walk over to sit with Amber, doing my best to keep away from Cyrus at all costs. It wasn't that I didn't want to see him, it was more that I knew as soon as he found out my secret, he'd want to stop being my friend.

"What are you doing?" Amber interrupted.

"Nothing" I sighed.

"You've been acting weird for the last couple of weeks" she responded "Is something bothering you?"

"Um..." I hesitated.

"Don't be shy" she encouraged "If there's something on your mind you can talk to me"

I was feeling like my mind was going to explode. My head told me to keep silent, yet my heart begged me to tell Amber the truth. I decided that the best thing to do, was follow my heart.

"You promise you won't judge me, right?" I mumbled.

"Of course, so please let me know" she replied.

"I... I kind of" I muttered "I have a crush"

"Ah, I see" she reacted "And who would that be?"

"I guess I can tell you" I rejoined "My crush is... it's... Cyrus"

I paused, waiting for Amber to berate me for what I had told her. To my surprise, she wrapped her arms around me and I felt myself calm down instantly.

"Oh Jonah, why would you be so scared to admit that?" Amber asked.

"Amber, this isn't exactly easy" I explained "Some people will hate me for it"

"To hell with them" she responded "Surely only Cyrus' opinion matters in this instance?"

"I'm scared that if I tell him about this, he'll hate me" I whispered.

"You really think that?" she continued "This is Cyrus Goodman we're talking about isn't it?"

"Yes" I confirmed.

"As in Cyrus, the kindest guy in the world" she added.

"That's another point" I retorted "I wouldn't deserve to be with the nicest guy in the world"

"That's not true" she argued "You deserve to be happy"

"Thanks Amber!" I beamed.

"You're welcome" she replied.

I took a moment to look back at where Cyrus was, and I noticed that he was looking back at me. I knew that Amber would expect me to act quickly, but I was going to think about things first.
