Mara

Mara watched carefully from a distance, as the girl Rey followed Master Skywalker through his routine.

Mara felt uneasy around the girl, she had this push, and pull, against the force that was powerful, and perplexing.

Rey shrieking-

"Careful!"

Brought her from her thoughts, and she looked to see the Jedi Master perched on his fishing ledge.

She released a small howl of laughter at Rey's panic, Skywalker must have done it one thousand times before.

The day passed on, as every dreary day on the island did.

After miles of hiking, keeping up with Skywalker, Rey paused.

Mara neared her, she appeared focused on something.

Mara huffed, nudging the dark haired girl with her muzzle, they were losing Skywalker.

Rey cast her a glance, before turning to the nearby hollow.

At the center of it stood a large, seemingly dead, tree.

The library.

Mara followed closely, as Rey approached it in a daze.

The two entered the library, Rey seemed starstruck.

"What is this place?"

She asked Mara.

The Lycan shot her a look as if to say, "what does it look like?".

Both of them jumped at the sudden appearance of Skywalker.

"Who are you?"

He asked Rey.

Just what Mara would love to know.

"I know this place."

Was all Rey said, her fingertips brushing the collection of ancient books.

"Built a thousand generations ago, to keep these-"

Skywalker motioned to the books.

"The original Jedi texts. Just like me, they're the last of the Jedi religion."

Rey surveyed the library, avoiding Luke's searching stare.

"You've seen this place."

He insisted.

"You've seen this island."

"Only in dreams."

Rey whispered.

Mara understood her awe.

The island had a certain identity in the force.

You could feel the conflict, the balance, the grey that was the true force.

"Who are you?"

"The Resistance sent me."

Mara rolled her eyes.

She'd given that answer before, it still gave no explanation to her power.

"They sent you? What is special about you?"

Rey didn't answer, and Mara had a feeling it was because she didn't know the answer.

"Where are you from?"

"Nowhere."

Now that question seemed simple to answer.

Rey's statement didn't seem defensive, or secretive, just her honest opinion.

"No one's from nowhere."

Luke said softly.

"Mara's from some random moon orbiting Iego."

Mara huffed, as she had told him many times, that was inaccurate information.

"Jakku."

Rey responded.

Mara assumed it was a planet she'd never heard of.

Or maybe a system?

"Allright, that is pretty much nowhere."

Skywalker sassed, causing Mara's jaw to drop.

Humor?

Had she just witnessed Skywalker joke?

"Why are you here, Rey, from nowhere?"

"The Resistance sent me. We need your help. The first Order has become unstoppable."

Mara let out an annoyed groan, dramatically leaning against the wall.

"Why are you here?"

Skywalker pressed.

Rey licked her lips, seeming scared of the words she was about to form.

"Something, inside me has always been there... and now it's awake. And I'm afraid. I do not know what it is... or what to do with it. And I need help."

The force.

"You need a teacher."

Skywalker nodded.

His face showed scars, and regret, as he said.

"I can't teach you."

Rey's jaw dropped, as Luke turned, and left the library.

"Why not?"

Exactly what Mara would like to know.

She knew Skywalker.

She could see in his eyes, he didn't want to leave this girl lost, searching for answers in all the wrong places.

"I've seen your daily routine. You're not busy."

Rey sassed, marching after the moody old Jedi.

"I will never train another generation of Jedi. I came to this island to die. It's time for the Jedi to end."

Mara howled in disagreement, prowling after them.

"Exactly,"

Rey said, seeming to understand Mara's sentiment.

"Why? Leia sent me here with hope. If she was wrong, she deserves to know why."

Rey stared the grim jedi down.

"We all do."
