Chapter 6

“Leo! Leo!” I call while bursting back into the House. People stare at me as I run through the building, trying to find my friend. I find him. “Leo! They’re overthrowing. What does that mean? What’s happening here?”

“What do you mean they? Overthrowing? What does that mean?”

“That’s exactly what I said. Anyway, they are the girls. I overheard them talking about an overthrow and not being able to get the message to their friends.”

“So you were eavesdropping?” A crowd starts to form around us.

“No!” I scowl. “I was walking and I heard people talking, so I listened.”

“You were eavesdropping.” Leo sounds unconvinced.

“Are you even taking this seriously? What if- what if we’re thrown off the island, and they take control? We’ll be slaves, Leo. Slaves.” He takes this into consideration.

“Hmm. Yeah, you’re right.”

Ian walks over to us. “Hey, what’s going on? I heard overthrow.”

“Yeah, that’s basically what it is; the girls supposedly want to take control of the island,” Leo says. “We have to do something about it.”

No shit, Leo.

……

I sometimes wonder why I signed up for this job. Like seriously, I thought there would be more fun, more danger involved. All we do each day is plant, water, grow, repeat. The girls haven’t showed up for two days now, and we haven’t done anything about the ‘Overthrow Situation’ yet. Off to a good start of my new job!

We’re working two days after the incident in the House and suddenly, I see someone go down. Another person on my left crumples to the ground and my reflexes start working. I look at where the dart came from- above, and take out my swords. A dart flies past my shoulder- they’re targeting me now. I see a black-clad figure (seriously, why do they always wear black?) jump down from a tree and start running off to the girls sector.

I charge after the girl, and bring out my gun. I don’t want to do this. I stop, and I shoot her. It hits her leg and she falls. I run over and see her laying down, gasping. “Come on, it was the leg!” I cry, kneeling down, trying to get her to show me the wound.

“Get away from me! Stop!”

“Woman, I’m not doing anything. Just tell me why you were shooting us.”

“I-I was forced to! Now let me go back!” The bullet wound looks horrible with blood running down her leg- not running, but gushing.

“I can’t let you. You would die before you got to the walls. Just let me help you.” Her face softens, and finally she lets me. I take out some spare cloth we were taking back to our village and wrap the wound. The details of her face distract me for a second- stunning blue eyes, red lips, blond hair. I shake my head. I can’t be focused on those things right now. She’s going to die soon.

“Is it bad?” She whispers, just barely audible.

“Um, no.” I lie.

“You’re lying. I can see it in your face. I’m gonna die! Out here, where no one will no except for a stupid boy!”

“Hurtful. Geez, I still need to figure out why all of you girls hate us so much. And yeah, I need to take you back into the village.”

“No! I can’t do that.”

“I’m sorry, that’s the only way.” I pick her up and start walking toward the village. I need to keep her a secret. If the rest of the boys figure out about her, then she’ll be thrown into prison.

I silently slip into my house and place her on the couch. I open a cupboard and pull out painkillers and open the bottle. I pull out one and get a glass of water to give to her. I hand her the pill and the water. “Here, swallow it.” She obeys, then she falls asleep.

…..

When I close my eyes, the only thing I can see is her face. And her bloody leg. And the battle from yesterday. You get the point. And when I open them, I want to close them again just to see her face. I fall down onto my bed and sigh. Wait. Oh crap, I forgot about my friends! I jump up and sprint out of the door and into the sunlight. I see them lying on the ground. No blood, but they’re unconscious(I’m seeing a pattern here- black clad figures, unconsciousness, what the heck?). I sigh and jog over to Leo’s house. I knock, and say, “We’ve got two down.” I go back inside, knowing that Leo would finish up the work.

The sun’s setting soon, so I make myself a sandwich, and then I make another one for the girl. I take one last look at her, then fall asleep.

“Rise and shine!” I hear Evan’s voice from outside, panting heavily. Evan’s our wake up call guy. It’s self-explanatory. I get dressed and then head outside. What to do, what to do. I see my friends working on the corn plantation, so I head over to the wheat. I see some full grown, so I cull them and take them back to the village. Our pile of supplies is slowly growing, so I head over to the trees. Sweat pouring off of my forehead, I climb one and survey the land. Whoa. What’s that over there? It’s them, the girls. I climb down and scramble over to the people working at the corn farms. “Hey guys? The girls are coming after all of this time.”

“Whoa. We’re so scared.”

“Yeah, we kicked their butt last time, what stops us from doing it again?”

“No, it looks like a bigger pack, even bigger than ours.” I plead, but they won’t budge. It looks like we have about two minutes until they storm us. “Let’s go, come on!” No dice. Oh god, oh god! I run back to my house and see the girl gone. What the hell?! “Where did she go?”

I hear shouts from outside, and I run out to find our village under siege.
