Chapter 10
Leo stands above the rest, his six foot tall, muscular body glowing. I must be hallucinating… again. The rest of the Gatherers are behind him, with their weapons ready. The girl who was pinning me to the ground stands up slowly, and she puts her hands behind her head. “Whoa, whoa, we’re just having a little fun. Can’t you take that?”
“Stop lying. I saw what you were doing. And no one does that to any of our men, no matter what.” Leo said.
“Yeah, yeah. We get it. Now we’re gonna leave right now. And you’re gonna let us go. Okay?”
“Ha! You think we’d let you do that? Get ‘em!” Leo shouted and and started running towards the girls. I get up and scramble over to the houses. I’m back. Nothing can hurt me now, I’m safe. Or so I think. But I’m far from so. “Lance!” I hear someone shout behind me. I steal a glance and am appalled by what I see.
Brook stands there with a sword through her chest, blood staining her white and black flannel shirt. She crumbles to the ground, and I see Knight, one of our Crop Gatherers, pull his sword out of her. “Oh, is this yours?” He asks and runs away. Blinking out of my daze, I run over to Brook and kneel down. “No, no. What happened?” I murmur, trying to lift her up. I’m successful and then half drag her towards a building. I lie her down there and run inside the building and look for something to cover up the wound.
After I can't find anything, I let out a cry. "Shit! No, this can't be happening. Why?" I'm going hysterical and run outside. Brook's bloodied shirt got redder than it was before, if that's even possible. I hear her mumble something, and I lean closer. "Uhh. I- I don't think I'll make it. I just- I just wanted to tell you... Uhh." She groans and blacks out.
"Ah, crap!" I say, and drag her to my house. The grass behind us turns red as we go. After about a century, we end up at my shack. I creak the door open and spot the bed. I lay Brook down on the pillow. I groan, then slide to the floor. This day has been so weird, first the repeating thing, now Brook stabbed.
Well, there's nothing I can do right now except for stop the fighting. Wait. The fighting! I stand up and look at my swords on the wall. "Long time no use, old pals." I say to myself. (I think I'm going a little crazy- I'm talking to myself now.) I take them off of the wall and run outside.
I take in my surroundings. The fighting is relentless- this time, though, the boys are winning. I dash over to a pile of corn and climb on top of it. "LISTEN UP, PEOPLE OF GAEA!" I shout as loud as I can. Everyone stops battling and looks at me. "This is not needed! Why are we doing this? We could probably find a way out of this place if we all just worked together! You guys understand?"
"Yeah." I hear Ian say. Why wouldn't we work together. For these two years, we have gone against each other. I call this no more! What do you think, Leo?" But Leo was nowhere to be found.
"Hey, where did he go?"
For once, the field is completely silent. "Leo!" We shout, trying to figure out where he is. We send out search parties to look for him. I pace back and forth. "Ah, crap. This day is getting worse and worse by the hour. I wonder if we'll find Leo."
"Don't worry, dude, we'll find him." Ian says.
Could this day get any worse? I think to myself, but then take that back because I know that whenever you say that, everything does get worse. But no matter. I pick myself up and walk over to the cluster of buildings to my left. I spot my house and jog inside.
I see Brook sitting up and I walk over to her. "How are you feeling?" I ask, even though I know what she will say.
"I feel suckish. You know? The pain of being stabbed in the chest sucks. But I am really lucky that the sword didn't pierce my heart, because that would've been fatal. Hey, did you know that five plus five is ten? And Santa Claus isn't real? And- and-" The only way, I think, to shut her up is this: I put my hand behind her head and pull her in. I kiss her really slowly, my heart jumping out of my chest. I pull away and she whispers, "Now, why did you do that?" I chuckle.
"I- I think I like you. A lot." I pull her in again and kiss her faster now, thinking that if I stop, then she will go away, and everything would be gone. I realize that she's kissing me just as fast, maybe thinking the same thing as me. Finally, she pulls away and says, "I think I like you too."
