Chapter 12
The girl with the dark brown hair stuns me. My mouth falls open as I back away to the wall. “Hello there.” The girl says.
“Hi..?” I stammer out, my brain dead.
“Who are you,” she asks. “And why are you here?”
“I-I’m Lance.” I stutter, trying to find something to say. I need to leave. Now.
“Oh, don’t worry, I won’t hurt you. Come. Sit down.” The girl says, patting on the chair next to her. I move slowly toward the chair.
“What’s your name?” I ask, slightly nervous, ‘cause, you know, I just found someone in there that I don’t know.
“Night.” That’s all she says, then her eyes glaze over as she stares into the void.
“Shouldn’t you be with all of the other girls?” I ask, mentally patting myself on the back because I thought that was a fair question. Turns out I was wrong.
“Because,” she says. “they banished me. I did the Unforgivable.” A few questions run through my head before I ask, “What do you mean by ‘Unforgivable’?” She shakes her head.
“It’s something I swore to never speak of again.” She says, then pulls her hood up. This is the first time I get a good look at her. She wears a black cloak that goes to her feet, with a light green, long sleeved shirt underneath. Her pants are also black, that cover all parts of her body. Night looks up, then asks, “What?”
“O-oh, nothing.” I say, blushing. I didn’t realize I was staring at her. I scratch my neck. “Soo,” I say. “What now?”
“Well, we need to get you out of here, no?” Night says, then exits the house. I scramble after her.
“Hey, where are we gonna go?” I ask.
“We need to get you out of here, I said that.” She says, obviously annoyed.
“Okay then.” I mutter, then follow her out the door. It’s still pitch black outside; I think it’s about midnight when we step outside. Even though it’s dark, Night gallops through the forest like she’s been here her whole life. I’m running beside her when something happens: my foot catches onto something, a root most probably, and my ankle rolls over. I fall to the ground and yelp. “Ah!” I cry, clutching my foot. Night stops and looks back. She leaps over and leans down. “Oh shit.” She says, then presses my foot down. “Yes, it’s sprained. We need to take you back.” She sighs. “Can you stand up?”
“I- I think.”
“Okay then, get on up.” I stand up to find my ankle throbbing. But I go anyway.
“Why are you here? For real, I mean?”
“I already told you, I was exiled from the girls’ side. They don’t need me, that’s why they banished me. They thought that I would do something, but I did the opposite. I won’t tell you what it was, but it involved spying and lots and lots of running. So anyways, I was recruited for a mission and didn’t do it. Something happened during that mission, something that changed my course of action.”
“Wow. I never would’ve thought of that. So what happened during that mission?”
“I told you, I won’t say it!” She screams, then runs away. I hobble after her.“Wait, come back!” I find Night sitting in a tree, staring into blank space. “Hey, come down.”
“No, you piece of crap. You’re a dirtbag ______(fill with swear word of your choice.) you _______. Has anyone ever told you that? I guess not.” That’s all she says before jumping down and thundering away. I sigh, then walk after her.
