Chapter 9

I’m this far, so I try my luck. I dash to the right, to the cornfields, and run right into someone. They grab for me, but I roll backwards. People are starting to surround me, so I stand up and start running again. I see two people in front of me and I drop to the ground, sweep kicking their legs so they fall. One of them, though, produces a knife in her hand and swipes at me. I duck and punch her in the stomach. She crumbles, and I dart forward through the golden brown plants. I’m almost at the river that splits the girls’ side from the boys’ when a red haired person tackles me from my left. I fall and hit the ground hard, hard enough so that my head starts spinning. It’s over, I think. Then, I black out.

…..

Once I’ve regained consciousness, I see a circle of girls standing above me. I smile with dread and wave. They pull me up and I'm pushed back to the cells with my hands pinned behind my back and a gag in my mouth. "Mfho mfh!" I muffle, not being able to speak.

"Give it up, Lance. You're not going to escape anytime soon." The girl says. "Why are you even trying?"

"Mfff! Mfef."

"Just shut up!" We're back to the cells and she pushes me into the hole. Someone comes in and unties the gag. I spit. All of the girls leave and I'm alone again. For once, I'm pleased. That was a great run, I think. They didn't know I was a POW... do they still think that? Something is going on here, and I need to figure out what.

I hear a rustling outside, and scramble over. What I see is not something I’ve seen ever since I woke up on the fields that one fateful day. A metal spider- three feet on both sides. It had to be made by someone. That, and it’s metal. The thing crawls on the ground to my cell and I scramble backwards. It looks at me with its four red eyes, then sinks into the ground.

What was that?! A metal spider! Let alone a three foot one! Things are getting weirder and weirder here every single day. Maybe I’m hallucinating, so I go to sleep.

…..

Knock knock. The entrance to my jail opens and Brook steps in. “Come on. You’re going to be questioned.” So I follow her as she explains that I’m going to the Mountain to be asked questions. When we get to the alley, she stops and says, “Good luck. You're going to walk to the Mountain and then go up one floor. Then, you'll be questioned, and it won't be easy. Stay strong." She kisses me on the forehead, then leaves.

Whoa. I just realize that same exact sequence happened yesterday, when I tried to escape. Word for word of what she said. I look up, and the sky is gray. It was sunny a few minutes ago. Okay. Something’s going on here. Not that nothing’s been happening here for the past few days. But something’s wrong with, I don’t know, the space time continuum thing that people keep talking about.

Instead of following her word, I turn away and look at the wall. Wait. I could escape right now, without a backup team with them. I go slowly this time, with fear that I’ll get caught. I slink along the walls, making my way to the Wall. I’ll start calling it that now. People surge out of shops, trying to find something. I stop for a second and catch my breath. I’m sweating. But how? It’s not even hot. I realize I have something on my leg. A big silver substance covers the lower half of my leg. “What the heck?” I wonder out loud. I try to pry it off, and the thing starts to fall. I pull as hard as I can and it finally comes off. I toss it aside and it makes a low sound that echoes through the now empty walls.

I see heads pop out of houses and eyes glaring. “There he is! Get him!” I hear someone shout. I start running. Houses fly by me and a crowd starts to form behind me. I reach the Wall and place my palm on the scanner. The Wall slides open and this time, I dart to the left. Girls on the right side perk up and see me running through the corn fields, so they start chasing me.

Something I do different this time, though, is move diagonally so that I’m harder to follow. I’m at the river now and I jump in. I start paddling to the other side. I reach the shore and scramble to the other Wall. I’m almost there when the girls surround me. I have to think quickly. Come on Lance, how do we get out? I dart towards the girl in front of me and I smack my hand into her face. Blood flies out of her nose and she crumples to the floor. The two girls on either side of her rush over to me and I roll through them so they smack right into each other.

What happens next, though, is something I’m not ready for. About six girls come at me and before I can react, they pin me to the floor. One kicks the back of my head. I’m done, I think.

Then my saviors come. “Stop what you’re doing. Or else someone’s gonna be hurt.”
