Chapter 2: The Scenic Route

It had been a long day at work. The coffee shop was even busier than I had anticipated. I barely had time to eat my meals. Of course, Jon had called in. Who would consider actually coming to work when you're scheduled, anyway. Especially when you know the person you're working with had been there since the morning rush. I didn't leave work until sometime after 2AM.

It was another rainy night. Those nights make me wish I lived further south, in Southern California maybe. I don't have to work tomorrow, so I plan to go home, grab a bottle of a nice brew, and pop in Dracula: Dead and Loving It. I'll probably try to scrounge up some pizza. I lock up the coffee shop and hop on my bicycle. It's not too far of a ride to the freegan home, but I like to take the scenic route. It takes me by the water.

Tonight, however, I will be taking the short cut due to the rain. It's not the best area, though. It's a good thing the rain is keeping people off the street tonight. I ride under the bridge that supports the freeway. Taking advantage of the shelter, I hop off my bike. I look into my backpack for a quick snack and to jot something down in my journal. I thought I had heard something, but I was so tired my intuition didn't kick in. As I was putting my journal back into my cargo pants, I had a tingle run up my spine. Suddenly, I was hit upside the head. My final thoughts before slipping into unconsciousness centered around the fact that maybe I should have taken the scenic route...
