"Fred, I don't think we should go back to the others quite yet." Bree told me when we got back to Seattle. I knew she was a bit nervous about meeting the group that Riley wanted us to kill, but I thought she had believed it was our only option. Not only were we alone, but we also had a baby. Neither of us had even thought that a vampire could have a baby, so I was hoping that someone would know what to do. "So, what do you reckon we do, then?" I asked her.
"Maybe we should find an abandoned house in the woods somewhere. I think it might be best to see how Syd develops. Did you say that Sidney Lynn was only pregnant for a week? Surely Syd will develop faster than other newborns. Look at him! He's already outgrown the newborn sized diapers in a couple days!" Bree had a point. Syd was developing much faster than normal, and he ate five cans of powdered formula a day. I even thought I saw a tooth beginning to cut through his gums! His hair was a beautiful strawberry blonde consisting of tight curls. His eyes were the most intense shade of turquoise I had ever seen. My son looked like an angel when he slept.
I considered Bree's suggestion, then agreed with her. It took a couple hours, but we finally found the perfect place. It was near the outskirts of the Wenatchee National Forest about thirty miles east of Seattle. A quaint little cottage that consisted of four rooms, it was nestled in a small clearing near a babbling brook. Bree offered to watch after Syd as I went into town for supplies. I checked my wallet and found that I still had plenty of money, but I felt that maybe I should find a car. I found an abandoned Toyota hatchback on I-90, looked at the car, and saw it just needed gas. I went to the nearest gas station, got some gas, and returned to the car. It started up uneasily. It wasn't the best, but it would do.
I went to Walmart after. I bought a convertible crib, some toys, a swing, a car seat, and more food for Syd. I also had to buy more clothes for him. I was thankful for the car, especially now that I had all the new baby paraphenalia to worry about.
When I returned to the cottage, I noticed my son was lifting his head. He cooed at me as he gave me the sweetest smile. My heart melted. I was in love! Bree fed and bathed Syd while I was putting the crib together. She suddenly yelled, "Fred! I need you to come here now! Something's wrong!" I was in the bathroom immediately. My jaw dropped at the sight in front of me. I couldn't believe it!
