Reason #22: Something bigger than yourself

"The world is big and I want to have a good look at it before it gets dark."- John Muir

One of the reasons to wake up every morning is knowing you are involved in something bigger than yourself. Big? How big is bigger than ourselves?

Two years ago, I joined a peace camp in one of the coolest areas in Cambodia. The campsite laid beneath the olive green hills and rice field. The landscape itself seemed to tell me how small I was compared to a thousand of seeds and pixies of dirt.

As I landed my feet on the ground, I appeared like an ant adapting its petite self to the wide atmosphere

As I landed my feet on the ground, I appeared like an ant adapting its petite self to the wide atmosphere. My body and mind found rest seeing a view over the horizon. This memory is close enough to help me be aware that I am part of something universally beautiful and awestruck. Because I am in it, so are you. You are part of something universally wonderful.

Look around and see every element and aspect made up a community you're living in. Perhaps, it's that Asian classmate whom you thought would never be interested in French literature as much as you do. It might be that African group of chefs who passionately learn to cook Asian food your mum used to make for you when you were in grade school. Possibly, an introverted neighbour whom you usually ignore secretly shares with you the same dream to pursue entrepreneurship. Perhaps, the most silent church attender gets on his knees to genuinely pour out his prayer for you and your family from time to time. At some university libraries, the smallest nook and cranny can hide the most reliable sources that are likely turning your assignment papers on good grades. When a detail becomes something bigger, life swaps.

Reflection

What small thing do you need to see bigger than yourself? How does it change the way you think and deal with life? In what area can it help you treat someone or something better?
