Reason #29: Carry the burden

There's a song from 1969 that goes like this,

So on we go, his welfare is my concern
no burden is he to bear, we'll get there
But I know he would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

To say that carrying someone on a long road is not heavy is an understatement. It is heavier if the person you carry has personal belongings with them which means you may have to bear double loads. How do you carry others' loads? By considering the person as someone worthy of God's grace, by putting yourself in their shoes and by letting God fill you before you can pour out to others.

The reality is that your willingness to help can grow cold as the burdens become stronger instead of getting lighter. We need to remember that we are not superheroes. We have our own limitations. We have burnout and unexpected crisis. The thing is we should not stop caring for one another just because we cannot carry the burden. When carrying the burden becomes a burden, let us redirect our motive and source of strength. Jesus carried our burden which was the weight of sins. He did so by dying on the cross for all regardless of the heavy burden we had. We are to do the same thing for one another, not by dying literally on the cross, but by thinking and loving as Jesus did.

What does carrying someone else's burden mean to you? In what way can you do it without burning yourself out?

Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ. -Galatians 6:2
