Roman smiled as he sat next to his husband, Virgil, looking out at the ballroom of people. He was king now, considering today was his coronation after he married his husband a few months prior. Roman watched on as many people came up and gave him their blessings, saying 'Long live the King' afterward. Roman sighed softly as he held Virgil's hand, rubbing small circles into his palm, a calming sensation that he knew that always worked on Virgil, especially in social settings like these. Virgil smiled softly at the familiar sensation, squeezing his hand back, plastering on a smile to the next person who came up.
It was a woman with her daughter, who looks about 8 years old, with shiny blonde hair, tied up into a neat bun. The woman smiled at the two and urged her offspring forward towards the royals. The child looked up shyly, taking a box out from behind her back, offering it towards Virgil, who gingerly took it out of her hands with a soft 'thank you'.
He opened the box, seeing that there were two rings in the box, a black and gold one. Virgil smiled, noticing they were for their thumbs, raising Roman's hand, picking the gold one, and slipping it on. Virgil put the black one on his thumb, smiling as it glistened in the light. "Thank you, young one, my husband and I will wear this dearly," Virgil said, handing the young girl a rose that was nearby, placing it in her hair. The young girl giggled and bowed to the kings with her mother, stepping off the stairs giddily.
The doors slammed open, startling everyone in the ballroom, Roman immediately standing up to see who it was. It was one of the guards, bleeding from the eyes, yelling, "The kingdom is under attack! Get to cover, your Majesty!" Virgil put a hand on his mouth to prevent himself from puking at the sight, the two royals being pulled away by a servant into the servent shortcuts. These were used primarily for the servants to get around the castle quicker and make quick escapes for cases like these. The frantic yelling of multiple people filled the halls of the castle, heels clicking and feet thumping against the tile and hardwood floor, showing that all the quests were running, from what, the royals did not know. They were still running for cover.
There was a burst of manacle laughter that filled the ballroom, silencing everyone at once. There were two men, both clad in black clothing, their faces covered with cloth, one was green and another was yellow. "Now, everyone, calm down. We're not here for you all, we are here for King Roman," one of them spoke, the people could not tell, another voice cutting through, this one having a deeper accent than the other. "If you give us his location, you all will get out of this alive!" A guard ran towards the two, the one in green chucking a knife through the creases of the metal helmet, right into the guard's neck, who fell to the ground with a thud. "Anybody else wants to die?" The one in green twirled a knife in his hand, gleaming in the light.
The people continued to flee the castle while the royals were now in the safe room in the basement, far from harm. Virgil's breathing was ragged, pupils dilated in fear, having not considered that the two could be assassinated for being on the throne. The country was always very peaceful, so, why now of all times? Roman could feel Virgil's panic, bringing him into a tight hug, holding his head to his chest. Roman was freaking out, but he needed to stay calm for Virgil, otherwise, neither of them would get out of this alive.
Roman started working a plan in his head, trying to find a way to stop the two assassins from killing both of them. The infantry was low due to being at peace with each neighboring kingdom, only having a few hundred in the kingdom. Seeing as how the assassins have gotten through the castle doors, they must've killed or injured at least half of their soldiers already.
Roman bit his lip, knowing there is only one option to stop the two from injuring more innocent people. Roman lifted Virgil's chin to look at him, tearing up at the fearful expression on his lover's face. Roman kissed him tenderly, taking his ring from the little girl off of his thumb, slipping it onto Virgil's. Virgil pulled away, eyes filled with confusion as Roman gave him a big hug, tears going into his shirt.
Roman mumbled, "Love, as much as I hate having to do this, I need you to stay around for the kingdom. Make sure everyone is safe. I love you." Virgil gasped and said, "Roman, Roman, no, there-there has to be another way! I can't lose you! Please!" Roman pulled away from the hug, kissing him passionately one last time, looking towards the servant who was looking out for the kings. "Joan, please look after Virgil for me, don't let him out of here," Roman ordered, taking off his wedding ring and setting it in Virgil's palm. "Hold onto this for me, love, just in case if things go right," Roman kissed him on the forehead, running out of the safe room, nodding to Joan to follow his order.
Virgil sobbed, dropping to his knees, holding the ring to his chest as Roman ran to the ballroom, taking his katana out on the way, getting ready to defend himself. He peeked into the ballroom, watching the one in green stab a guard over and over again, as the one in yellow sat in the throne chair, watching. Roman made his presence known, yelling, "You two! I order that you leave this kingdom and its' inhabitants immediately!" The green hopped up, a dangerous look in his eyes as the yellow stood up, walking towards the king. "Ah, King Roman, nice of you to finally show face to your special guests. It is quite rude to leave your guests unattended, we had to find something to entertain us while you were gone," the one in yellow said this, stepping over guards and servants bodies, getting dangerously close.
Roman held his sword out in a defensive manner, keeping his eyes trained on the one in yellow as the green hadn't moved yet. Roman took a small step back, watching the yellow one stopped at arm's length, eyes gleaming in the light, showing malice. He snapped his fingers and the green assassin started sprinting towards Roman, grabbing a morning star from the ground, swinging it around his head, slamming it into the ground where Roman stood, making sure to back away quickly from the danger. The morning star continued to wave around widely, soon being thrown at Roman's feet, catching him off guard, tripping him, and losing his sword.
The green one sat on Roman's back, pinning him to the ground, as the yellow assassin picked up Roman's sword, examining it. "I would assume this is custom made for King Roman. It would only be fitting to kill him with it, right?" The green one giggled manically, and said, "Yes! I would love to see his blood stain the sword, would fit it better than this boring silver." Yellow shrugged and squatted in front of Roman. "Well, it was fun, you have any last words? Not that it would matter," He said, playing with the sharp side of the sword with his leather gloves.
"P-Please, don't hurt Virgil, I beg of you. You can take all the gold in the castle if you leave him alone," Roman said, desperate to protect Virgil now, tears rolling down his cheeks. The one in yellow shrugged and said, "Whatever, he wasn't on our target list, only you. We will take up on that gold though. Goodbye, King Roman."
"Death to the King!" Roman heard the one in green scream before the sword plunged into his back, stabbing his lungs in the process. Roman coughed up some blood, wheezing in pain, soon breathing his last breath.
