Justice like lightning should ever appear, To some men hope and to other men fear
-Black Lightning

Janelle POV...

I sit in the car waiting for my sisters and father to come out of the police station with Anissa my big -freedom Fighter- sister. She gets locked up more than a bad drug dealer, I can't be mad though she's a great kid. I see my dad storming out of the station my sisters following, I scoot over for Jennifer to sit down and they all open the doors at once and get in. I pull out my phone and text Jennifer.

To:Twin💙

He looks mad...

Her phone dings and she looks at it and looks at me before typing.

From:Twin💙

He didn't even look at her, he just got up and left...

I shake my head and rest my eyes as dad drives once he hits the road he's yelling.

Dad:Oh so you looked at your schedule for tonight... And you had a choice. Protest the one hundred or attend Garfield High's fundraiser, and you chose the path that led you to getting arrested.

Anissa:It wasn't a choice, dad.

My phone dings and I pick it up seeing its from Khalil, my best friend.

Dad:No, it was a choice, Anissa. Everything is a choice.

Me:*mumbling* school ain't obviously...

Jen hits me and lays her head back against the seat...

I look back at my phone.

From:BFF💚😍
Where are you?

To:BFF💚😍
Just coming from the PS, picking up Harriet Tubman... Wyd?

Anissa:It was a peaceful protest.

Dad:Oh, yeah burning police cars? Breaking windows? You know that's actually the very definition of peaceful.

Wow dad using sarcasm, he must be mad. He doesn't even use that on me.

Anissa:Well I guess it depends on what your definition of peace is, because the people in Freeland, they haven't had peace in generations.

Dad:Returning violence for violence, multiples violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.

Anissa:Dr. King, and I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Dad:Fannie Lou Hamer.

Anissa:Yup...

I thought that was off of that fence movie but I guess I was wrong...

Soon we hear police sirens and dad pulls over muttering about the night getting better and better. I see Jen grab her phone and start recording, they shine lights into our faces and Jen starts to show them she's recording.

Jen:Yeah, yeah how do you like it!

Dad:Jennifer.

The fat ass cop tells dad to step out of the car, I frown.

Me:Dad tell him your rights. He hasn't given any explanation for pulling you over, he has no right as of yet to ask you to step out of the car.

Dad:Janelle... Officer what seems -

Fat ass: Get out, please.

Dad:Okay, okay look this is getting out of hand. Now this is the third time this month!
