Kurt, the colonel, and Mr. Hudson stood together, discussing the regiment and its plans in Lima when it occurred to the three of them a way to give the soldiers some much needed socialization. "I was thinking of giving a ball at McKinley to get more involved with the people here," Mr. Hudson smiled, "and I'm sure that the officers could be invited."
"Splendid idea, sir," said the colonel.
"Yes," Kurt agreed, "I do think a ball would be well received by everyone."
Brittany's ears perked up. "Did you mention a ball? Of the dancing kind? I long to be able to dance with all my new friends in the regiment," she sighed as the looked to the soldiers on either side of her, "wait... why don't we dance now?" Shooting a look at the tired piano forte player and the band, Brittany struck a pose. "Hit it!"
Brittany grabbed a hold of the hand of one of the officers and sang as she danced with him. Her voice was sweet, and her moves were graceful and flawless. Kurt watched with some embarrassment, though proud of his sister's skill and bravery. Sir Figgins watched in appreciation as Tina joined in in perfect time. Rachel and Kurt found themselves standing against the wall, Rachel with her hands on her hips and Kurt clutching the strap of his bag.
Mr. Hudson moved himself next to Rachel. "Your sisters are very talented, Ms. Schuester," Mr. Hudson noted. Rachel spun around and stomped over to the corner where she sat alone, singing backup.
"Uh-Thank you sir," Kurt responded in the place of his sister as he watched her walk off. Mercedes, eager for her own spotlight, pulled Kurt into the dance. She didn't move much, but it didn't matter as her voice filled the room. Even Kurt found a place in the mix for his voice, though he sang quieter than he liked to, as he had been urged to do in public. Rachel turned away her head, annoyed.
When the song finished, Kurt shuffled into a spot away from the floor, closer to the band, his performance high quickly being stripped away from him by reality. He looked to Rachel and took a deep breath, then looked away again to see Sir Figgins congratulating Brittany and Tina on their performance. Next to Figgins was an unimpressed Mrs. Puckerman, giving judgemental looks to the Schuester ladies. Kurt hoped to never become someone like Mrs. Puckerman or Sebastian Hudson who would put another person down in order to make them feel better about themselves, or someone like Mr. Anderson who seemed to ignore others to escape attention. Kurt wanted to be a bright and open person, unafraid of expressing himself, unafraid of the consequences of having an unpopular opinion. Unfortunately, there was no room in that world for a person like the one Kurt wanted to be. Kurt walked out of the room and, as usual, no one noticed.Sorry for not updating in like forever I've been going through a lot :(. I hope to write more soon, though.
