The sky was transitioning into its last phase of the day. The weather had been cloudy, full of gloom for the past three days, letting not even a thin ray of sunshine peak through the clouds. A warm, tight fitted navy sweater stuck onto my body as I wrapped my arms around my stomach, pacing around my room. I had forgotten my Physics book at school and had a huge assignment and test due on the desk within the first minute of class.
The door to the front of the house opened as I continued pacing. I looked over to find my mom dropping her keys on the counter and placing the paper bag full of what smelled like bakery products on her hip as she stared at me. "Casey..."
Being my mother, she knew why I did certain things I did. So I knew now that she knew I was trying to think of something and was worried. "I forgot my book at school and I have a test and," I closed my eyes as I bit my lip. "My 3.8 GPA cannot lower," I mumbled in a barely audible voice. But it was loud enough for her to understand.
"Why don't you just take the car to the school and see if it's open so you can get your book out of your locker?" My mother suggested.
I looked out the window that I was standing adjacent to. The sky was getting darker as each second ticked by. And though I hated going out alone, I knew my mind wouldn't stop worrying for the rest of the night until I had a fair shot at the test and assignment. The sound of rattling keys made me snap out of my thoughts and look over at my mom.
"Be back soon and we'll order pizza." She said as she occupied herself by taking out the contents of the bag.
. . .
The school had always looked creepy to me, but it was even unlikeable at night with the trees branches casting shadows. Still, these trees were not as worse as the ones on the road and in the wooded areas of the town. The fall wind bit at my cheeks as I wrapped the oversized sweater closer around my knit top and myself. The bottom of my UGG boots thudded against the pavement as the few streetlights lit the dark parking lot. It was all too quiet, so that's why when I heard the voice, I jumped. "Hey, new girl!"
I turned around to find a familiar look guy with spikey hair. It was Mikey. I stopped, my arms still wrapped around myself as I saw a few more kids from the school pass us with stuff. I looked at it for a second, making out dark, almond colored stuff in cups and many, many pumpkins. "What.. is this?" I asked, turning my attention back on him.
"The pumpkin prank," a girl's voice answered for him. I noticed the brown locks almost too quickly as she came into view. Rachel was with Mikey. I looked at Mikey who was looking back at me expressionless, as if he was bored. He had a dark, navy sweatshirt. "Wanna participate? It's your first ever, it'll be fun."
I didn't hesitate at all when given the question. "I have to get my book from my locker," I quickly responded. "But you guys have fun. Is Bella here?"
"Nope, she's a bookworm, just like you it seems," Rachel said as she giggled. Her eyes were focused on the other kids that started to get impatient. "Well, come on!" She urged Mikey and then Madison. "We'll see you around."
I nodded at them as they left, not into the school, but to the side, dragging along the carts that had a mischievous aftereffect I'd soon be seeing at school. But my main goal was to get in the school, get my book, and get out.
Just to my luck, the lights in the school were off. A few were left on in some classrooms, emitting a low light to lighten up parts of the long hallways. I knew I wasn't alone because of the prank going on, but it seemed as if nobody was on my side of the building, where my locker was. Not one janitor. Not one snicker from a student, not one trace of pumpkin.
I prayed in relief quickly once I got to my locker and got my book out. As soon as I tucked it into my arm, I heard a noise, almost a whisper. I looked over to my left quickly, looking down the hall. It was dark, except for a single light from a classroom. I slowly shut my locker, but the voice was back, and this time it was as if it reached out for me. I felt a cool air tickle the skin on my neck.
I didn't want to stick around any longer, because I've had my fair share of horror movies and "checking it out" wasn't my thing. I quickly headed to the exit I had come from, but before turning the corner, I saw a silvery light at the very end of the same hall. It was like a flickering silver shadow, just suspended in the air.
I didn't know much about spectrums or UV rays, but I did know that what I had just seen was no mere light coming from a classroom.
