I held my hand over my mouth. "No way, no way..."
Burr immediately stood up. "I'm sorry, is it too soon? I should've picked a better time after the fight and-"
I interrupted him with a quick kiss. I realized just then how much I missed him. Within his embrace, I felt whole. He was the only man for me, the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.
I smiled. "What made you think I'd say no?"
"So is that a yes then?..."
"Of course it is!"
Aaron wiped his brow. "Whew! For a second I thought you were going to say no, (Y/N)."
"You thought I would say no?"
"No, I'm too irresistible to say no to."
I rolled my eyes. "Aaron, you're too full of yourself."
"I'm kidding. Is it alright with you if I ask for your father's blessing?"
I felt my face go white. My father was infamous for rejecting young men asking for his blessing. "Aaron, are you sure? You saw how he treated John!"
"Hey. No matter what happens, we'll still get married."
"Please be careful, Aaron.."
He smiled and pecked my forehead. "When am I not careful?"
He walked into the dining hall. I eavesdropped from the other side of the door.
Father: "Ah. Aaron. May I help you?"
Aaron: "Yes, I would like your blessing. I wish to marry your daughter, (Y/N)."
I heard my father quietly sigh. "Mr. Burr, what do you plan to do after the war?"
"I want to become a lawyer. Like your son in law, Alexander."
"Mr. Burr, I'd prefer if only one of my children marries a struggling lawyer."
"But I-"
"How will you be able to financially support my daughter? Her unborn child?"
"Sir, I assure you I went to a good college. I'll provide support for (Y/N)."
"I've heard many men say that, most of them are living in the poor houses now or dead. They ran off and joined this war, die, and now they leave their pregnant wife to fend for herself."
I heard Aaron fall silent. I felt like crying. Why was my dad being so cruel? He was a good man, I just wished everyone else could see the Aaron I know.
The door opened and Aaron walked out. His confident exterior was gone. It was replaced by a sad smile.
"I got the blessing."
"You did? I thought it wasn't going well."
"There were some conditions, however."
I crossed my arms. "What kind of conditions?"

On another note, I'm going to bring the book to a close relatively soon.. Less than ten chapters. Get those cover contest submissions in, I'm checking the tag!
