The smell of burning food wafts up the stairs. I bolt out of bed, quickly throwing clothes on. I run down the stairs and see Will dancing to music in the kitchen while he cooks.
I calm down and sit on the counter. I watch as he puts the hamburger in the pan and pats them, his hips swaying to the beat of the music. The evidence of his first failed attempt sits in the trash can.
He flips the patties and puts cheese on top of them. I grab condiments out of the refrigerator and put some on the buns. He puts the now cooked patties on the buns and we eat leaning against the marble countertop.
Caramel and two other demon teens play in the main room. The smaller female demon floats a toy up into the air and Caramel sets it on fire with a lighter. Caramel laughs as the toy burns. I move closer to Will. He wraps his tail around my waist and chuckles.
The other female demon zips around the living room at lightning speed. She eventually sits back down beside the smaller girl.
I finish eating my late lunch and walk over to the demons. I sit down beside Caramel. The two other girls look at me curiously.
"This is William's mate, Ash," Caramel introduces. I wave and smile sheepishly. The girls come over to me.
"I'm Rose. And that is Delilah," the older girl says. Delilah hides behind her. Caramel grabs my hand and pulls me down to her height.
"They are mates," she whispers loudly. Delilah squeals and Rose laughs. Will sits down beside me and puts me on his lap. I watch as they go back to their game. They use their gifts while playing.
I look at Will's tail. I wonder what his gift is. What if his is bad? I get off of his lap and get onto the couch. He looks over at me confused. I look away quickly.
I feel the couch dip down as he sits down next to me. I look down at my shoes like they are the most interesting thing in the world.
"Hey Ash. What's wrong?" Will asks. I stay silent. He lifts my chin with his hand. He looks straight into my eyes. I look away.
" Ash. Look at me, " he says. I look at him. His eyes are filled with confusion. He tilts his head.
"Please tell me what's wrong," he pleads. I look away from him.
" What's your gift? " I mumble. He chuckles and lets go of my chin. I look up at him. His green eyes twinkle in amusement.
"That's what you were so worried about?" He asks laughing. I look down in embarrassment. He stops laughing when he sees my face.
"Ash. It's okay. You're my mate. You deserve to know these things," he says reassuringly. I look up at him curiously.
"So what is your gift?" I ask quietly.
" Well... Why don't I just show you? " he says laughing. He stands up. Everyone else in the room looks over at him. The children run up to him. I watch as the kids surround him.
"Okay. Move back everyone," he asks. Everyone moves back quickly.
He lifts his hands up. The air starts swirling around him. He waves a child over to him. The child spreads their wings and jumps into the small tornado.
It swirls the child around as the child flaps their wings. They fly out of the tornado and to their friends. They land next to the others.
Will stops the swirling and walks back over to me. He lifts my chin up.
"You're gonna catch flies if you keep your mouth open like that," he says laughing. I smile sheepishly. He pecks me on the cheek.
"So I've been meaning to ask you.... Um... Would you like to go on a date with me?" He asks. I nod. He laughs.
" How about five?" he asks. I nod. Butterflies erupt in my stomach.
"Okay then. Wear something comfy," he says walking out of the room. I sit there shell shocked. Caramel and Kaiser walk up to me. Caramel grabs my hand and pulls me up.
"C'mon Ash! We're going to pick out your outfit!" She exclaims, dragging me to a room. I look around, realizing that it's a huge closet. Kaiser walks around.
She picks out a pair of black jeans and a Twenty-one Pilots tee shirt. She throws them at me and I put them on in the dressing room.
I look in the mirror. The jeans hang down and the tee shirt is about five sizes to big. I walk out holding up my jeans.
"They don't fit," I state. But instead of picking out new clothes, Kaiser walks up to me. She lifts her hand and the clothes adjust to my size. She steps back looking at her work. She nods.
I look in the full size mirror attached to the door. The clothes fit perfectly and they hide my tail and wings. Caramel runs up to me.
"You look good," she says giving me a thumbs up. I chuckle.
"Thank you, " I reply. She grabs my hand and pulls me out of the room. We walk into a bathroom.
"Sit on the stool," she says. I sit down on the stool. Kaiser walks in and styles my hair. Caramel occasionally points out something that she missed.
They get done and turn the stool around. I look at my hair. It's styled back in a lazy finger brushed way. I smile at them.
"Thank you guys," I say. They nod. I walk out of the bathroom and back downstairs. I have an hour until it's time to leave. I pace around the living room.
I resist the urge to pull at my hair. Rose bolts up to me. Delilah follows after her.
"You should see William. He looks amazing!" Delilah says. She jumps up and down excitedly and Rose laughs.
Kaiser and Caramel walk into the living room and over to us. Rose puts Delilah on hee back and bolts back off to wherever Will is. We sit down in front of the television and Caramel turns on a cooking show.
The show starts but I can't focus. I'm shaking with nerves. The show ends before I know it and the old grandfather clock chimes five o'clock. I stand up nervously and wait by the front door with Caramel and Kaiser.
