I grab clothes and my phone and stuff them in a bag. The kids grab theirs from the ground and keep them close to them. Cocoa slips out of the room and comes back with a basket stuffed full of food.
She grabs her bag and smiles at me. I quickly text Will and take a deep breath. I look up and smile at them. We're getting out of here. Cocoa walks over to the door and I stand behind her.
She slowly opens the door and looks out into the hall. She waves me and the kids over and we walk out. The windows leave a small glow of light but otherwise the hallway is completely dark.
I walk down the hallway my wings shielding the others. We walk pat a large window and I look out. A car sits in the parking lot and I see a person get out. A couple of other people get out. They hold weapons and I flinch back instinctively.
Cocoa pulls at my sleeve and I look over at her. She points at a door that's opening. I look around frantically. The door to what looks like a bathroom is open and I run over to it, pulling the others along.
We hide inside, the kids in the bathtub and Cocoa behind me. I set my bag down beside me. I lock the door and grab a bar of soap. I grab a towel and wrap it before standing in front of the door. I hear a knock on the door and I freeze.
"Is anyone in there?" A male voice asks. I look over at Cocoa. She nods and moves back a bit. She takes a deep breath and leans against the cabinet at the end of the room.
"Yes, sorry," she replies to the person. The person sighs and walks away from the bathroom. I set the soap down and grab my bag from off the floor. Once the footsteps are gone, I open the door and look out. Nobody is there so I motion for the others to get out.
We walk past the door that was open earlier. Ray holds on to my right wing as the light almost fully disappears. Cali walks in front of me and waves her hand. A small globe of light appears in front of her.
I smile at her gratefully and she leads us down the hallway. We make it to the elevator and Cocoa presses a button. The doors close and the gears shift around. I wince at the noise.
"They won't even notice it. People use the elevator all night long," Cocoa quietly reassures me. I nod as the elevator comes to a stop. The doors open and I look around.
I've never been on this floor but Cocoa and the kids seem to know it well. We run down the hall following Cali. We make it to the front doors and Cocoa grabs a key.
She unlocks the door and we all slip out. I move to run but Ray grabs my hand. He points up at a guard tower. I nod slowly and take a step back. Cali extinguishes her orb of light, leaving us in total darkness.
We keep close to the walls. A light comes towards us and I panic slightly before Ray waves his hands and darkness envelopes us. The light can't pierce through it and it moves on.
I sigh in relief and we keep walking towards the gates. We turn a corner and end up directly under a guard tower. Ray concentrates on keeping the darkness around us as we walk to the gate.
We wait there in silence for a couple of minutes before a car come through the gate. We run past it and outside of the gate. We walk until we can't see the building anymore.
I sigh and set my bag down on the ground. Ray lets the darkness drop from around us. I sit down on a rock and grab my phone. I go to text Will but there's no service. I groan and put my head in my hands.
"No service," I tell Cocoa. She frowns for a minute and thinks. She then nods and grabs something from her bag. She pulls out a map and shows it to me.
"We can go to that town. I've never been there before but I know it's a bigger one and we can text Will from there," she says pointing at a location on the map.
"Sounds good," I tell her. We get up and grab our bags. We walk towards the town . The kids sing songs and dance around us. I smile and laugh along with them.
Cocoa looks up at the stars and sighs. She looks back at the map and we turn to the right and walk that way. The kids get tired after a few minutes so we stop and rest. I hand them a bottle of water to share.
They take a couple of sips and hand it to Cocoa. She takes it gratefully and sips it. She hands me the rest and I drink it before we get up and start moving towards the town again.
Cali points out a small light in the distance. Her small yellow wings lift up in excitement. Cocoa smiles and follows us towards the city. Ray uses his dark blue wings to fly around us.
We get closer to the light and Ray flies down to us. He falls next to Cali who laughs and picks him up. They run in front of us and towards the city. Cocoa smiles and flies after them, the streetlights make her red wings luminescent.
I smile and fly after them, my wings stretching out and relaxing. They land in a small park. Cocoa sits down on a bench watching the kids who went to play on the playground.
I land beside the bench and sit down beside her. I grab my phone out of my pocket and turn it on. I call Will and wait as the phone rings. The kids run over and sit down beside us. As I'm about to hang up, he answers.
"Hello?" He asks. I smile as the kids reply. I set my bag down beside me and look at Cocoa. She watches as the kids talk to Will. After a minute she shushes them so I can talk.
"Hey Will. Mind picking us up? " I ask him. The phone goes silent. I look around us, watching to see if anyone is around. When I don't see anyone I look back at the phone.
"What?" He asks confused. I chuckle and smile.
"We got out. We're at King Park in Pancakes, Texas, " I tell him. I hear him gasp. Kaiser and the others start cheering in the background. I missed them, I realize as I talk to them for a while.
"Yup. We'll be there by tomorrow. You should find a hotel to stat at for the night," he tells me. I nod and yawn. I lean against the back of the bench and close my eyes. Even though I don't need sleep this whole thing is mentally exhausting.
"Okay. See you then, " Cocoa says.
"See you," he replies. I hang up the phone and look over at the others. I look up hotels and find one not to far from the park. I push myself off the bench reluctantly and follow Cocoa to the hotel.
We walk in and the kids look around in awe. I go up to the receptionist who stares at us in shock before quickly recovering. I pay for our room and grab the key.
We walk into the elevator and it goes up to the fourth floor. The kids run out, searching for our rooms. I hand Cocoa the extra room key and she smiles at me.
"It's over here!" Cali yells. I smile and shush her. She looks up at me confused and I ruffle her hair.
"We have to be quiet because other people are sleeping," I tell her softly. She looks up at me confused.
"What's sleep?" she whispers. We walk into the room as I explain to Cali and Ray what sleep is. Cocoa smiles at me gratefully. I'm going home.
