This genre is sometimes set in the future; some authors may decide instead to set the story in an alternate universe or another planet; regardless, the fact remains that the setting should be crucial to message of the book. If, for example, an author is writing a story criticizing nuclear power, then it might be imperative to set that story in an alternate universe where nuclear power is the main source of energy instead of fossil fuels.
