patrick was at a loss. a furious loss. when writing his note he truly didn't think deeply about it's meaning. he had even less of an idea of what evangeline thought it meant. and absolutely no clue as to what she meant in her reply. the gang took no notice when he seemed quieter that day, the only exception being henry, when his offer of a cigarette was declined which was out of character for the usual chainsmoker. he shook it off however, as he was well accustomed to patrick's frequent mood swings.

evangeline on the other hand had a detailed plan mapped out in her journal, the secret one, sealing the deal with a bloody kiss she manifested in the girl's bathroom. as the bell rang, her feet raced to escort her brother to the arcade, then gleefully skipped the rest of the journey home.

"is that you jelly?" her mother called in response to the sound of the front door closing.
"it's me mom!" jelly called back, waltzing in to give her mother a kiss on the cheek.
"how was school?" sonia half-heartedly asked, far more interested in the gameshow on the tv.
"busy! i'm gonna start my homework and try to finish it before dinner. i love you mommy" she explained, earning a small nod from her mother who had already tuned her out. evangeline turned and a disgusted scowl appeared on her soft face. she slipped her shoes off and her cream sock-clad feet pitter pattered up the stairs. instead of making a b-line towards her room however, she stopped at her brother's bedroom door. she opened it slowly and silently and tiptoed towards his bed, kneeling down at it's foot. her hand slipped under the bedframe and produced a large, brown shoebox. she lifted the lid and smiled as her delicate fingers met her brother's clunky polaroid camera, gifted to him one birthday from someone evangeline couldn't care less to remember. she placed the lid back on the box and slipped it back under the bed in it's exact position. she bit her lip in excitement, closing the door silently behind her and leaving the scene without a trace.

the wait for phase 2 of her plan consisted of evangeline bouncing her leg under the dinner table in excitement and lying in bed, smiling evilly as she stared at her plain white wall, waiting for the clock to strike 11. she heard her mother trudge to her bedroom, closing and locking the door as she always did. evangeline slowly and silently slid her window open and swung one leg out, her foot landing on the small side-roof below. she did the same with the other leg, the camera hung around her neck and a white teddybear in between her teeth. after she was fully outside, she placed the teddybear on the windowsill and slid the window closed on the bear's neck, keeping the window slightly ajar for her return. like a feather, evangeline tiptoed along the roof and slowly descended down the ivy trellis on the side of her house. as she landed on the grass, she raised her hands triumphantly in the sky and mouthed sarcastic thank yous at the trellis, mocking the gymnasts she had seen practicing at school and the way they would behave after mild applause. her face dropped all emotion and she spun around, her feet carrying her quickly yet silently to her destination. she took the back paths that night, avoiding street lights and houses with big windows. and then she arrived.

the house was large-ish in comparison to hers. the lawn and garden looked well maintained, as did the rest of the house apart from the mailbox which had mild rust on it. the rust however, was not enough to cover what evangeline was looking for.

h o c k s t e t t e r.

evangeline smirked, ducking down as she walked down the side of his house. none of the downstairs lights seemed to be on, and the majority of the house was dark to match, his family fast asleep inside. she continued to circle the house, though stopped and pressed herself against the wall as she came across dim light shining through a cracked window. she cursed under her breath at his obviously chaotic sleep schedule, though his room being on the ground level would make her scheme a lot easier to pull off - once he had fallen asleep. she creeped behind a large hedge which shielded her from the window and crouched down, preparing herself for the wait ahead.

after what felt like a generous 30 minutes, the light finally switched off. evangeline was hasty to continue, though her wits knew better and ensured she gave him another half hour to fall asleep. finally, she stood from her seat on the dirt, still crouching, and silently snuck up to the window. she kneeled under the window, the perfect height to raise her eyes just above the windowsill while staying as hidden as possible. a mix of relief and excitement filled her chest as she saw him sprawled out across his dirty mattress, mouth wide open and excreting drool down both sides of his face. she hook her head and chuckled, relishing every moment of seeing him so plain. so normal, boring, simple and vulnerable. evangeline had one last task before she could take the picture. she had to scout it's focus. while drafting her scheme, it became apparent to her that if she were to take a photo of him, he could use it as evidence against her. to expose her. evangeline was sure it wouldn't be enough to ruin her church-girl image, but it was too much of a pain in her ass to risk it.

her eyes scanned his dark room as best she could, the only source of light being the moon.
notebooks? no
dirty clothes? no
a can of hairspray? no
a lighter? ugh
and then her eyes landed atop a tall wardrobe. sitting virtually spotless on top of the cabinet was a fluffy, brown teddybear. a red, heart shaped patch was sewn onto it's belly with patrick's name embroidered in the centre. evangeline bit her lip at how utterly perfect this was. she could present him with a photo of the bear, leave him with it even - and she could be sure he wouldn't want to show the photograph to his gang. patrick was far too tough to still own a teddybear...
evangeline's fingers met the camera, silently raising it to her eyes. she took a deep breath and lifted the flashbulb. she had one shot to take the photo regardless, she wanted to be sure she got a good one. she pressed the button, eliciting a shutter sound and a bright flash. she quickly ran around the corner of the house, her back pressed against the wall as her hand held the developing photograph and her eyes never leaving patrick's window.

evangeline snuck home with a swing in her hips as she shook the photograph, anxious to see the results. her limbs led her silently back up the trellis and through her window like a serpent, removing the window-stop teddybear with her teeth. she flicked on a dim lamp as not to wake her mother and flopped on her bed - belly first. she sunk her teeth harder into the bear's head and reached for her dresser drawer to retrieve her favourite pen. finally, she flipped the photograph over. facing her, was a slightly blurry, but still intelligible photo of the teddybear. patrick's teddybear. to muffle an excited squeal, she pulled her teddy's body away from it's head which was still firmly in the grip of her teeth and snapped the stitching keeping the body parts together. she removed the bear's from her mouth and stared into it's black, beady eyes. she planted a wet kiss on it's snout and threw it behind her, an evil smile now present on her otherwise dead face. she bit the lid off her pen and began scrawling love hearts on each corner of the photo. and in pink, cursive righting underneath the bear, it read:
