the brunette girl slept heavily that night, an eerie smile plastered on her face the whole 7 hours as her nails sporadically dug into the flesh of her thigh. that morning, she greeted her mother and brother, mostly just listening to their conversation and only adding the occasional reaction to continue the family's good rapport and avoid any suspicion of illness or goings on.

as she walked to school side by side with her younger brother, she set eyes on the blue trans am sputtering along towards school, making sure to stay a ways back, for her own excitement and under the instruction of her brother, a frequent target of the gang. she politely farewelled eddie at the school gates and quickly assumed her usual seat in class. 20 minutes passed before she heard the 4 sets of heavy footsteps she was waiting for.

evangeline eyed them down as they entered the classroom, assuming their usual positions at the carved up desks in the back of the classroom. her seat was in front of them and slightly to the side, enough for them to see both her back and her side. as the teacher commenced the lesson evangeline 'listened' intently, her gaze unwavering, patrick's eyes glued to evangeline's sweetly fragranced and freshly washed hair. out of the corner of her eye she saw patrick's dark eyes locked on to her figure. this was her moment to strike. she set down her pen and reached into her shiny new pencil case, a present from her mother for the new school year. she slipped out the green ruler and placed it on the edge of her desk, the one facing patrick. immediately, she heard the air escape his lungs from his nose, turning around to see his jaw clenched and twitching and a large blue vein appearing along his forehead.

"what the FUCK are you doing with my ruler?" he screamed, knocking his chair back as he stood up.
"mr hockstetter! language!" the teacher scolded.
"what is the meaning of this?"
patrick ignored the teacher, storming towards evangeline as his hair swayed with each step. he quickly leant down to her level, grabbing the ruler in one hand and her arm in the other.
"what, the FUCK are you doing with this? how did you GET this?" he spat, inches from her face as she blinked with his speech in mock terror.
"i-i don't know wh-what you're talk-"
"BULLSHIT! YOU'RE A LYING PRUDE AND YOU'VE BEEN IN MY FUCKING LOCKER!"
"please," evangeline begged, ensuring her voice cracked at the end of her innocent plea, "i don't even know where your locker is" she shakily finished.
"thats bullshit" he muttered. his head down, he snatched her out of her desk, his fingers pressed deeply into her pale arm as he pulled her out of the classroom, the shrieks of the teacher and stares of the students almost a blur to patrick and evangeline. as they arrived at his locker, the class onlooking from the classroom door, he dropped the green ruler and hastily unlocked the locker door. what he didn't notice in his rage was that evangeline had picked up 'his' ruler, slipping in her pocket and rubbing away at the 'p.hockstetter' she had scribbled there with great haste. his body froze and his face dropped as he slammed open his locker door. sitting there, untouched, was his plastic, green, schooltime ruler, bite marks on the corners and his initials large and unmissable on it's bottom side. the boy stuttered, looking a few time between the ruler and the girl.
"i didn't take your ruler, patrick" evangeline whispered, a tear rolling down her left eye, placed there after much practice and strategy, as she looked at the bright red finger marks now left on her pale, porcelain-like arm.

"you will explain this situation to me, in full, right now mr hockstetter. with no excuses." the headmaster boomed, across his large maplewood desk from evangeline and the perpetrator of this outburst.
"i told you, sir, i dont know." patrick hissed through his teeth.
"well thank you for your cooperation patrick." the principal spat sarcastically.
"evangeline, what happened dear?" the principal turned his focus to the young girl who was hunched up in her chair, purposefully shooting doe eyes at the principal while shying away from patrick.
"h-he said i took his ruler, he said i broke into his locker and took it, so he dragged me to his locker to prove i had taken it."
"and did you, miss kaspbrak?"
"no, sir." she replied timidly.
"shes fuckin' lying" patrick sunk back in his chair.
"patrick. language." the principal scolded him before returning his focus to the girl.
"your ruler please, evangeline?"
evangeline nodded and handed him her ruler, now free of any pen marks.
satan bless the clearance sale markers, evangeline thought to herself.
"so is this your ruler, patrick?" the principal leaned forward, ruler in hand. patrick's mouth scrunched up in annoyance, knowing now that it wasn't, but that it once held his initials, and that it was written and erased on purpose.
"what i thought, mr hockstetter. a written notice and 2 saturday detentions. and a genuine, heartfelt apology to miss kaspbrak less her mother wants to take more affirmative action regarding the bruising" the principle lifted his eyebrows as he motioned towards the section of arm evangeline was cradling.
"i'll give you a moment while i get your notice written up." he announces, standing up from his large leather chair, closing the door behind him.

"you fucking psycho" patrick looks at her, fuming and enraged. she turned to him with a neutral face, her mouth curling up into her signature sadistic and dead eyed smile. this earned a scoff from patrick, completely baffled that he had caught her, knowing now what she was truly like, baffled that she had basically admitted it to him, and yet the rest of derry was none the wiser.
"i like your locker" she deadpanned. he shakes his head at her, jaw clenched.
"you have a lot of things in there."
silence.
"i like your pencil case. i have one just like yours." she wiggled her brow at him.
"you're a fucking psycho bitch, stay out of my shit!" he pointed at her as he spat through his teeth.
"you won't keep me out for long. i wanna know your secrets. i know you like it." she taunted, sitting on her feet atop the chair.
"stay out of my shit" he repeated quieter this time, knowing he was still curious as all hell about the girl, pissed off that she too, knew this fact.

you're mine, patrick hockstetter.
