the first time lance had ever seen a dead corpse was in kindergarten.

it was supposed to be a fun little camping trip in the forest including almost his entire family. lance and rachel always loved to explore the new space, making sure to not travel too far.

the day was cold and wet, making the experience less than enjoyable. even though these results were undesirable, that was a positive for the twins as their creativity could branch into a more dark territory. pirates, ghosts, you name it.

lance tipped over his backpack, rachel excitedly watching on as he moved his hands around in the stack.

lance's smile widened, and he waited a second as his sister held her breath. then, the boy rose his hand from the pile. in his fist, a small compass presented itself. the glass was half broken, but the arrows and small letters were still visible. the two giggled in excitement, lance happy that he could finally put the ancient compass to use.

the two jumped up and out into the wilderness, lance yelling to the rest of his family that they were going out of the camp to explore.

the leaves crumpled under their weight as they laughed and jogged through the trees. although the sky was gray and dull, the trees were as beautiful as ever.

the small twins slowed down, gasping to catch their breaths. lance rose his head, bangs flying up  and slightly covering his seemingly glowing blue eyes.

his sister was already staring up, transfixed and slightly confused as to what she was looking at. that made lance turn his head forward, moving his bangs from his eyes with the compass in hand.

the two's curiosity cost them their precious innocence.

tears weld up and quickly ran down shaky tan skin. lance's hands felt clammy, sweat and tears mixing together. rachel's eyes were wide with terror, but also filled with confusion as she was not old enough to comprehend the extent to what she was seeing. lance, on the other hand, knew exactly what he saw.

bloody and dainty hands hung limply, swinging along with the wind. a long blue dress with flowers printed at the side were present, but the bright blue was covered with vines, dust and dirt. looking more closely, it was noticeable that her neck had started to deteriorate, a thick rope draped and shoved deep into the remaining skin intact. her blonde hair, once beautiful and bright, was now littered with bugs and twigs.

the girl's skin was frosted over with dirt, gray and dull. she had very obviously been there for quite some time.

the two kids stared, and lance eventually dropped the compass, cracking the rest of the already broken glass.

then, they screamed.
