Broken (Gilbert Blythe)

chapter 1

Nova was sitting against a beautiful, old, oak tree in her backyard. Writing away, hiding from her reality of life.

"Crowds. Walking into crowds. The overwhelming feeling of stress flows over me like a wave, that is too fast. It feels like I'm going to drown. The feeling of nervousness, I don't want to be nervous. My anxious state makes me not want to talk or listen to anyone. Not even myself, it's like I can't trust myself."

Nova looks up and sees her beautiful, big house. She sees from the dining room window, her mother looking at her, she waves for Nova to come inside. She gets up and grabs all of her belongings, wiping off her sunflower yellow, lace trimmed dress, making sure no dirt was on it so her mother doesn't have a conniption. Nova walks inside to find her mother in the dining room, setting up the table. "Do you need any help, mother?" Nova asked with gentleness. "Yes I do, can you go get your siblings from upstairs for dinner? Also, your father won't be home tonight, so you will have some extra chores after dinner." Her mother said without hesitation.

All Nova could do is nod, she walks upstairs to her and Jane's room, she pokes her head in to see Jane and Prissy laughing and gossiping. Nova lays her things down on her bed. She clears her throat, "Hey guys, Mother wants us downstairs to eat dinner." She said with a small smile, nice to see them getting along. They nod their heads without saying anything. Jane makes her way to the bathroom to wash up. Nova stops Prissy, "Can you get Billy for me? I really don't feel like getting made of right now." She said with pleading eyes. Prissy nods her head, "Of course, Billy is such a dick." She says quietly so nobody other than Nova can hear, if the girls were caught saying words like these, they would basically be looked at as if they were the devil's child. Nova giggled before walking down to the dining room table and sat down, making herself comfortable.

"What were doing outside today?" Nova looks at her mother. "I was writing. In that book that Diana gave me for my birthday. It's nothing special." She gives her mother a slight smile. Her mother looks at her, "Why don't you try needle point instead? Or maybe something more useful?" Before Nova could respond, her siblings started making their way to the table and started eating dinner. "Are you guys ready for school to start back?" Their mother asks.

Jane looks up, "Not really, it's weird seeing Prissy flirting with Mr. Phillips all time." She says with a smirk. Nova looks up from her food with wide eyes and looks at Prissy. Prissy gets choked up on her water and looks at her. "Jane." She scolds her, with wide eyes. "I'm not flirting with Mr. Phillips. I don't want to be with anybody. I don't plan to marry, or at least until after I go to Queens."

Billy laughs, "What's the point? You won't be having a job when you marry. The 'job' you'll have is being a wife and taking care of your husbands every need." He continues laughing. "That's enough!" Their mother looks at her children. "None of my children are getting married any time soon. We will talk about this once you guys are older, but for right now, we are NOT talking about marrying anyone. Understand me?" She says, looking at all of her children. Everybody nods their heads. "Anyways, what I was saying, are you guys ready for tomorrow? To see your friends and everything?" Nova looks down. She doesn't have very many friends, she had met the new girl, that the Cuthberts are supposedly adopting, Anne. But she's not sure if she'll stick around. Nova's family didn't really approve of Nova being friends with Anne, but Nova ignored that.

"I'm ready to see Gilbert Blythe but he won't be there tomorrow. But he will be back the day after." Jane says excitedly, "He's so handsome, but Ruby has dibs so we can't talk to him." Jane says with sadness in her voice. Nova looks up, "Why should it matter if Ruby has "dibs" on him? He's his own person, he can choose to talk to anyone he'd like." Jane looks to her twin. "Nova, there's rules. You can't talk to Gilbert Blythe. You know how Josie is, she'll stand up for Ruby and make your whole school life miserable." Nova nods her head and looks down at her food.
