My fingers hover over the keyboard for what felt like days. I had ask Melissa permission to finish my article at home and just email it to her when it is complete. She had granted me permission but refuse to let me send it in a day late even though I was supposedly in bed with a high fever and headache. I swear that woman was becoming more like Mrs Florence with each passing day.
New tears clouded my eyes. The two people I care about hurt me badly and even though its been two days the tears won't stop as if the wound in my heart was very much fresh. What hurt more is the thought of another woman carrying the first born of the man I was starting to fall for. What if I wanted to be the one to carry his first born? Although I know he isn't the biggest fan of children he did treat them well and maybe I could have convinced him if time was on our side. Why am even thinking about this its only been a month?
I can't understand why Eve was so adamant for him not to tell me what was going on if it did indeed mean nothing to her. I don't feel like I know her anymore and Micah.
My phone went off for what felt like the millionth time. I glance at it to see an unknown number. I reluctantly pick it up and answer putting it on speaker.
"Ciara?" I narrow my eyes at the phone. Completely forgetting that the person on the other line could not see me.
"Bridget?"
"Yes Ciara it's me." She pause and I consider what she could possibly want. "Why does it sound like you're crying?"
I chuckle humourlessly. I haven't heard from this woman in months and even though I said I forgive her it still doesn't mean I want to see her face. "What do you care, how did you even get my number?"
"I stole it from Alaric phone when I went to Zen birthday party, please don't hang up on me." She rushes out.
I met up with Zen the day before her birthday and had gifted her a large toy car and a jewellery set. She wanted me to attend her party but I didn't want to face Bridget. I feared she'd make a spectacle and ruin the party.
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't."
"Mom is back and we both want to make things right with you."
I stay silent. "Please little sis name you're favourite restaurant and we'll meet up there say— four o'clock?"
I glance at the time. I had three hours to look decent if I choose to see them. "Please little sister. You did say one good reason."
"Fine. I'll text you the details."
I end the call before she could say another word and gingerly crawl out of my nest.
Giovanni Haynes
"You slept with my ex girlfriend and you're upset with me?"
I look up from my shot of brandy and glare at the man before me.
"Some nerve you got." I try to say calmly as not to let the children in the other room know that we're having a feud. "It wasn't until Eve confession did I put two and two together. You are so secretive big cousin, you were secretly married to Tara way before you told us, weren't you?" Mateo kept his mouth shut and that only confirmed my assumption.
"All this time I saw you as innocent while believing that your ex wives were the ones at fault when the truth was you had been cheating on Tara the entire time. Eve found out, that's the reason she broke it off with you. But she wasn't the only woman you were cheating with was it? Then you found out that Tara was pregnant so you stop but later on she found out about your infidelity; am I correct cousin? That's why she hates you so much. Was it even worth it?!"
"Congratulations Giovanni you hit the nail right on the head." He chuckle dryly. "You know you should consider being a detective."
He took the seat next to me placing his head in his hands. "Just drop it; I don't blame you. Eve was only relevant when I needed her to be. You wouldn't understand."
"Does this have anything to do with your parents?"
He took away my drink and drown its contents while staring straight ahead at nothing in particular. "I never wanted to be like my father, he was an unfaithful bastard. God only knows how many times I watch mum cry because of him. Turns out I'm worst than he was. I never wanted to hurt any of them. After marrying Anika I promise myself that I'd stay faithful to her. She was everything I love in a woman, she was filled with so much passion— so intense."
I watch him pour another drink. "But I mess it up just like I did with Tara and Leyla. I didn't caught her cheating she was the one who found me close to having intercourse with another woman. She was furious with me and herself, she believed that she had been my end game and—" I watch as the man I look up to, the man who is like an older brother to me and Bentley start to cry. Something I never saw him do before, he had always been so strong withholding everything. Although this moment doesn't make him weak, if anything I saw him as brave.
"I beg her to stay, but she told me off. When it was time for our divorce her lawyer informed us that she didn't want a penny from me. I insisted; I wanted her to at least be comfortable so I offered to buy her a house but she told me that she didn't give a fuck about the materialistic stuff all she wanted was to be with me. She said that she would have even marry me if I was living under a tree and all I had to offer her was a ring from a vending machine. That all she wanted was a faithful husband—for me to see her as enough."
I watch him, contemplating what to say. "You still love her, don't you?"
"I never stop loving her. I am the most foolish man on earth for letting the most precious woman slip between my fingers like sand." He groan then look at me. "I'm sorry I lied to you, you're not just my cousin you're my brother and I never wanted to set a bad example for you—"
"So instead you played the victim and the women the villains."
"I spent the past years trying to do good hoping it will wipe away all the negativity." He wore a smile.
"Did it work?"
"The judge decide to let me have share custody of Donaté, that counts, I only wish I could get Anika back, also."
I felt pity for him. "I know it's been a while but you could try getting her back."
Mat laughs loudly leaning back in the couch with his head turn towards me.
"A while? It's been three years, I'm sure where ever she is she's very much happy." He sigh. "Well that's what I hope."
I thought about it wondering if I should hire a private investigator to find her.
"Don't worry about me cousin. I lost my chance a long time ago but it's not late for you to fight for Ciara."
