ADELIA DAMON STAGGERED DOWN THE SIDEWALK, her brain fuzzy, her vision blurred. A half empty beer bottle sloshed in her hand and her clothing reeked of her own vomit.
She had tried, again, to get sober but failed miserably. Somehow locating her apartment building, Adelia threw open the door and started up the stairs. One of the boards of the stairs was loose and with a clear state of mind, Adelia knew that. But she was not currently in a clear state of mind.
Her foot hit the loose step and as soon as she put more pressure then she should have, her leg fell through, and a loud crack resounded in the staircase. Adelia had broken more then enough bones to know that she broke her leg.
Even though the alcohol numbed some of the pain, Adelia still felt a stabbing sensation in her leg which caused her to stumble backwards in surprise and pain.
Everything after that seemed to happen in slow motion.
Adelia saw the dirty ceiling, saw the dust swirling around in the air, saw as neighbors from above went to investigate the loud crack they heard. And then she saw nothing.

When Adelia woke up, she was being transferred into an ambulance on a stretcher.
Despite the throbbing pain in her head and the stabbing pain in her leg, Adelia jolted up and turned to the EMT nearest to her.
"Where are you taking me?!" She demanded.
"Ma'am, you need to calm down. You have a broken leg and most likely a concussion. We are taking you to the hospital, just calm down," the EMT soothed.
Adelia wanted to protest but the alcohol mixed with the pain meds made her head whirl and she just wanted to sleep....
The next time she woke up, she was in a hospital bed with a hospital gown on and a nurse standing next to her checking her chart.
"I'd like to check out," she told him. She didn't care that her leg was probably broken. She had been to the hospital too many times and she didn't like them.
"Adelia," came a voice from the door, "you aren't going anywhere."
Adelia froze at the sound of the voice. It was one she hadn't heard for a while. It was Emily Prentiss.
"Em? What are you doing here?"
"I got a call from the hospital. You forgot to take me off your call list so every time you go to the hospital, I get notified." The raven haired woman explained.
"My head is spinning." Complained Adelia. Emily looked at her with narrowed eyes.
"How much alcohol did you drink tonight?"
"Just one glass of whiskey, that's all."
"Adelia..."
"Fine. I may have had a bottle... And a half." Not to mention the amount of beer she had, but there was no way she was going to tell Emily that. Why add fuel to the fire?
Emily's eyes widened so much Adelia thought Emily's eyes would pop out of her head.
"Why, Adelia? Why? Why do you do this to yourself?"
"You know why," came Adelia's whispered reply. They didn't say anything more until the doctor walked into the room.
