Angelina stood patiently wondering if Elle really was asleep with a headache. She had tried to sleep herself but couldn't get her mind off her niece. She decided to bring Elle some ice for her head and some cookies as a peace offering. She also hoped the cookies would encourage her to at least eat something. She wondered if she should knock again when she heard a crash.
"Elle?" She pushed the door open, only then realizing that it wasn't locked tight. She saw Elle, crumpled on the floor and she quickly glanced at her arms, but there seemed to be no damage. She raced over to her and begged her to wake up.
"Elle...Elle...please be ok...please" she began to quietly cry over her as Elle began to stir. Elle's hand went straight to her head, a desperate attempt to stop the pounding.
"Elle! You're ok!" Angelina hugged her tighter than ever, knowing that "ok" was probably far from the truth. She continued to hold on to her, not wanting to let her go. Elle groaned and put her hands over her eyes, the light hurt her head even more. She had never had such an intense headache. Angelina loosened her grip as she saw her sister in such pain.
"Elle...what's going on?" Angelina didn't really know what to ask at this point and thought this was the best and most direct question to ask.
Though talking hurt, she kept her eyes closed and quietly answered, "I just have a really bad headache, Angelina...I ...I was just trying to get back to bed." She hated lying but couldn't bear the thought of a conversation at this point.
"Oh! Here...let me help you...slowly though." Elle obeyed as Angelina slowly helped her to her feet and to the bed. The world began to get dark a few times and she had to stop but she made it to the bed without fainting again.
"I brought you some ice," Angelina went to retrieve the items she had dropped. "and some cookies." She smiled. The mere smell of the cookies caused Elle's stomach to lurch. She scrunched up her nose and lay back down.
"Elle...you never turn down cookies. Come on...what's really going on?"
"Nothing, Angelina, it's just my head."
"It's probably because you aren't eating properly... you're hungry." Angelina said as she handed her sister a cookie. As if on cue, Elle's stomach loudly growled, confirming Angelina's suspicions and preventing Elle from arguing. "See?" she said.
Elle put the cookie down, too tired and weak to argue, but not wanting to eat either. "I'm really not in the mood for cookies, Angelina...maybe later..." another lie, she hated to keep this up, it was scaring her how easily the lies were coming now.
Angelina adjusted the blankets over her sister and gently placed the ice on her head. Though she didn't plan to drop the issue, she didn't find it fair to try to fight with Elle in this condition. She began to hum the lullaby again and Elle drifted off.
Hours passed as Elle now awoke to darkness. She had literally slept the day away. Thoughts of meetings, legislations, and laws passed in her mind as she shot up in bed, realizing all that she had missed. Her sudden upright position sent a jolt through her head down her spine and the darkness started coming again. Elle instinctively grabbed her head and shut her eyes tight, trying to prevent passing out... again.
"Elle..." Angelina's tone was firm. "You need to lie back down; you shouldn't jump up like that." She helped her sister lie back, though Elle still left her eyes shut tight to dull the pounding. A sudden realization hit Elle...what was Angelina still doing in here? She slowly opened her eyes and saw her sister staring concerned down at her.
"Angelina...what are you...?"
"Shhh..." Angelina put up her hand to stop Elle from talking. "I stayed here; I didn't want to leave you."
"Angelina I must get up...." Elle was surprised how strong her aunt had gotten as she forced her back down or maybe how weak Elle had gotten.
"Now...stop fighting and lay back down before you faint again."
The words stung, Angelina had already discovered one secret, and she was on the verge of discovering another. She didn't have the strength to push past her though, so Elle did as instructed. Her head had finally dulled to a less prominent ache as opposed to the pounding from earlier.
"Now..." Angelina finally let out. "Can we please talk?"
