I scrutinized myself in the mirror to see if I was trying way too hard or not trying at all.
I was wearing my (f/c) sweater that was really soft and comfy yet fit my form perfectly. Black jeans and converse. I had my hair in a simple hairstyle and I made an effort to look like I wasn't dead inside by applying tinted chapstick to my lips.
I smiled at myself, I know I can't compare to people like Yachi, who's extremely cute and kind and everything nice, and Kiyoko, who could literally knock boys out like bowling pins with her beauty alone, but I can be proud and like myself if no one is gonna do it for me.
That reminds me, I should apologize to Noya. He's always been so sweet to me, and we've been good friends since he got back from suspension a couple months ago. He was actually quite enthusiastic and happy when he found out, unlike my—
"Hey rat! Someone's at the door!" my biological menace of a little brother called. He was a few grades under me, but he could be in my grade if it was allowed since he's extremely smart.
"Okay!" I grabbed my phone and keys and told him bye as I walked out, in which he responded boredly.
"[Name]!" Hinata, a little brother I prefered, hugged me excitedly. Kageyama greeted me normally and I smiled at him.
"Lets go. Noya's gonna be at the school any moment now," I said. We walked to the school and lo and behold, Noya was stretching, leaning to the side as he rested his hand on his knee.
My breath caught in my throat.
He didn't have his hair up like usual, and had tight fitting jeans with combat boots. He looked like he transported straight from a bad boy manga and I got even more nervous than I already was.
"Hey guys! Took you long enough!" Noya waved as he jogged up to us. "Where're we going first?"
"My studio—eh, mine and my dad's studio," I said cooly, successfully hiding my blush. "It's this way."
I began walking as Hinata and Noya plagued me with questions, Kageyama pitching in a few times. I ignored the ones like 'What do you do?' Or 'Why can't you just tell us?' Or 'What's the studio for?' due to the fact that this whole thing was to answer this questions.
We arrived in front of a building that was no bigger than my house. It looked homely yet vintage as the paint started to crumble off the side. It was my dad's, and I inherited it and made it my own. I took out my keys and unlocked the door. The three were oddly silent.
"Go ahead," I consented. I could tell Hinata and Nishinoya getting super excited and Kageyama even had a happy and curious aura.
They walked in first and I turned on the lights, exposing my profession.
There was a silver and brass trumpet cases in the corner as well as a clarinet, bass clarinet, an alto saxophone, and a bari saxophone. A piano was off to the side and there was a guitar and a ukulele on a stand in the next corner. A bass and cello case lined up on the wall and two violin cases were stacked on top of them. I also had a new trombone, baritone, a flute, a bassoon, and oboe, a french horn, and a collapsible electric drum set in the closet, that's also stuffed with supplies and tools and drum sticks. All instruments that my dad and his dad collected over the years.
A bathroom door and a kitchen door were off in the back.
All of their jaws hit the ground, flabbergasted. I started to scratch my elbow, already feeling uneasy as I looked around the place. It was littered in expensive instruments, which despite being collected for years, it wasn't dirty.
Hinata gasped in delight as well as Nishinoya and they both turned to me with excitable expressions.
"Can you play for us?!" they shouted simultaneously. I exhaled the breath I didn't know I was holding as I closed my eyes.
"Phew..." I looked at them as they were waiting expectantly. "Pick one."
In a matter of mere minutes, Hinata and Nishinoya were opening cases, carefully of course, gazing at the instruments in awe. Kageyama watched, tense yet excited. He's such a dork.
"Kageyama, what do you think?" I asked as he turned to me with a geeky smile.
"Uh, which one do you like the most?" he asked back. I beamed like a lamp just imagining holding a violin in my hands and pleasing them with beautiful sounds. But I also imagined me doing a glissando on the piano and playing with blood rushing intensity.
"Violin and Piano!" I answer excitedly. Nishinoya and Hinata ran up to me with a cello bow.
"Play this one!" Hinata said, pointing. I nodded as I quickly set it up. Nerves and anxiety as well as eagerness welled up in my stomach. I don't know why I didn't show them sooner. This was thrilling.
I positioned the bow on the strings and began to play a simple short song. It's deep rich sounds filling the air as I closed my eyes.
I played the trumpet for them. I played the guitar for them. I played the alto saxophone for them and the clarinet. I played trombone for them which was hard since I wasn't used to such a large mouth piece but managed and apologized soon after. Such a mistake loosened up my nerves exponentially.
"You said you liked piano right?" Kageyama said after I closed the brass case. I nodded as I sat down on the bench. I stretched my fingers and breathed a deep sigh. Piano and Violin are the only instruments I play all the time. The others are just toys I play with when I'm bored. If they don't think I'm amazing at my prized possessions then why am I even trying?
"You got this [Name]! We already know how amazing you are!" Noya stated fiercely as if it was fact not fiction. Hinata nodded furiously and Kageyama gave me a thumbs up for encouragement. I smiled before turning my attention back to the keys. I started playing the song I've been practicing the most. I swayed with the music as the intensity crescendoed. I closed my eyes as my fingers moved spastically around the keyboard.
That was until I hit an ugly chord.
My eyes popped open as I retracted my hands to make the noise stop, but it ricocheted around my brain.
I knew I must've looked like I just lost my dogs or something because the boys gathered around the piano with worried voices.
"[Name]?!"
"Hey what's wrong?"
"[Name] why are you shaking?!"
