Chapter 5 - Breakfast

Sep. 6, 2014

I don’t know how I survived this week, but I managed to do so. I haven’t seen Luca since Monday. Every so often he’ll respond to a text, but he won’t explain anything. He evaded me Monday after school, and I’m now even more worried about what he’s hiding. What could be so bad that he refuses to see me after an entire day of begging me to ditch class to be with him? And Emily… I can’t even look at her anymore. She knows something is up, but without me telling her, she feels like I don’t trust her. I trust her, I used to trust her with my life, and I still trust her. But I don’t even know what’s going on, how can I explain it to her? Besides, it sounds like it would be better if I just let Emily live her life without me. If everything is as dangerous as Luca says it is then maybe its a good thing we aren’t as close as we were last year.

Moving around in the kitchen, Jana went about making pancakes. She didn’t have to make much, but at least the small task distracted her mind for the moment. She had been hoping she could spend today with Luca, but after the week she had, it didn’t seem very likely. He hadn’t even replied to her text inviting him over this morning.

Just as she was washing up the dishes used to make the food, the doorbell rang. setting her rag down, she dried her hands on her shirt as she headed for the door. Maybe this would draw her parents down and she wouldn’t have to worry about calling them down for breakfast. When she opened the door, it was the last person she had expected. “Luca?”

He frowned and stepped forward, but didn’t cross the threshold. “I’m so sorry. I’ve been dying to see you all week, but I knew if I did you wouldn’t be safe. I couldn’t get away safely until now. There are others that have come into town and have been watching our every move.”

She shook her head when he moved to step forward once again. “What are you talking about? What are you so mixed up in that it’ll put me into danger if I know anything about it? Are we even going to be able to be together, or are you, and me, going to always be in danger because of whatever your gang is mixed up in?”

“No, Jana, it isn’t like that. You wouldn’t understand, not yet. I can’t say anything, but I’m here because they’re on their way. If you’re still here when they arrive, then you’re in trouble. They won’t stop until they get what they want. This time, they’re going to try and go all the way.” This time when he moved forward, she let him into the house, closing the door behind him. “Please come with me today. Please, lets simply forget this week ever happened.”

“I can’t be in a relationship with you if you’re never around and never tell me why. I can’t worry like that. Can’t you tell me anything? Anything at all?”

Luca moved slightly closer, looking her in the eyes. “Come with me. We’ll… We’ll go to my place. We’ll be safe there. You can ask any question you want and I’ll answer it to the best of my ability. You just have to understand that there are things that will put you in danger if you know right now. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

She could practically feel the fear he held for her, so she agreed. “Let me just tell my parents I made breakfast and grab a few things. Then we can leave. I’ll only be a few minutes.”

He sighed, looking relieved. “I’ll help you grab your things.”

Shaking her head, she smiled. “No, I can do it. I’m a big girl. Besides, it won’t take long. How about you just go in the kitchen and quickly eat something. There’s plenty of pancakes made. I was kind of hoping you would show up, even though it didn’t look like you would, considering the kind of week I’ve had.”
