Blood Born

Chapter 3 – Friends

Mar. 23, 2015

Jonathan has gotten his hopes up for a long time that I’d be the one to bring his wife back. I don’t know why he thinks I’ll help him find her. Sure, she may be called my mother, and may have been the one to have given me life, but why should I find her? I’ve survived plenty long without her in my life. Besides, if I need a mom then I already have one. And it might just be about time I go and pay her a visit.

She was more nervous than she had expected to be as she raised her hand to the door. It was a few minutes before the door opened, but she wasn’t met with the sight she had expected. When her father opened the door she had, at the very least, expected a smile from him. She may have even wanted him to hug her, but that definitely didn’t happen.

“Can I help you?” She could see the confusion in his eyes as he stood there, only holding the door open wide enough for her to see him.

“Do you not remember me?” She didn’t think she would ever have to ask her father that question. It just didn’t seem fair. He was with her for everything, until she became a vampire.

“I’m sorry, but I’ve never met you before. Is there anything I can help you with?”

Slowly shaking her head, she backed away. There wasn’t anything he could do, not if he didn’t even know who she was. “No, sorry I bothered you.”

He didn’t close the door until she was back on the sidewalk. The moment she heart it shut was the moment her legs gave out. Someone had done something to them when she was gone. They took her parents from her. It just wasn’t fair.

“Jana…” The voice was hesitant, but she would recognize it anywhere.

“What are you doing here? Have you come to gloat about the fact that you’re now the only parent I have left? Were you the one that took any memory of me from my parents? What about Oliver? If he’s still okay, will he even remember me? Is there even a point to any of this?”

He shook his head, looking sorry, but there was no way he actually felt bad for her. He wanted this to happen, she just knew it. “I must apologize, but yes, I am the one that took their memory. It wasn’t after you left. As a matter of fact, it was before they ever had you. With the idea that you’d be transitioning at the age of ten, I didn’t think it was fair of them to have to deal with the pain of losing you at such a young age. I set their minds to forget everything about you the moment you asked the question. You must have asked them.”

Going over the last conversation she had with her parents, she finally understood what her mother was saying. She had said that a man had told them that once she asked if she was adopted that they wouldn’t see her again; that she’d be gone forever. It was him, but he wasn’t necessarily meaning that she’d be gone forever, just the fact that she was their daughter would be gone, never to be given back to any of them.

“Again, did you also take Oliver’s memory? How old was he when you dropped me off? One? Two? How could you do that to someone so young?”

“No, I didn’t take his memory. The thing about a child’s mind is that they are still growing. They’re mind is still changing, transforming. Even if I had wanted to take his memories of you, it wouldn’t have worked as it did with your parents. Something could’ve gone wrong and, rather than the memories disappearing, his could’ve been altered. A possible outcome would be that, rather than you being his sister all his life, you could’ve been the girl he had a crush on. I’ve seen it happen before and I didn’t want that for you. Besides, I thought you would still like a connection to your previous life, if you sought it out.”
