Blood Born
Chapter 4 - Searching
Mar. 26, 2015
I was supposed to turn seventeen today, but I supposed when you no longer age, and are technically dead, you don’t really turn a year older on your birthday. Last year there had been many ideas of what today would be like, but none of them were even remotely close to what it really is. I disappeared from the school three days ago, just to show Jonathan that I truly did mean what I said, but I think I’m going to go back today. I doubt he remembers that today is my birthday, but that doesn’t really matter. I wouldn’t want to celebrate it with him anyways. But, today, I will begin the search for my mother.
Not wanting to have everyone staring at her once again, even though none of them would remember her previous return, Jana took a back entrance to the school. It was the middle of the day, and a Friday, so classes were in process, but she didn’t care. This way she’d be less likely to run into so many vampires. This was probably her only way of showing up without Jonathan knowing beforehand. His mind was too distracted as he had decided to take charge of training the younger vampires instead of Lena.
She could also feel his frustration every time he caught sight of Sam. Sam wasn’t a very good fighter, but he held his own in his mind, but that wasn’t enough for Jonathan. Sadly, to him, he couldn’t do anything about it because he still had the hope that Jana would return and work with him. He didn’t want to mess up his one chance of having his daughter and hopefully wife together again.
As she walked through the hallways full of humans and a few vampires, it felt as though the crowds were simply parting for her. It had never happened for her before, but she could understand why it was now. She still dressed the way Lena dressed her up her first day as a vampire, but now she held herself with more confidence. She held herself with such power and dignity everyone could feel it, and they gave her a respected distance between them.
There was only one problem with that. With her having a clear space to walk, that also left her in the open for anyone to see her, even though she didn’t truly mind. The only problem it posed was the moment someone decided to step into her path. “What are you doing here?” There wasn’t anger in the voice, not like she had expected, there was simply worry. “Where have you been all school year?”
Frowning down at Emily, Jana didn’t have an answer for her. It was a viable question, considering she disappeared at the beginning of the school year, and now the year was nearly over. She had only been there for about a month until her whole world was thrown upside down.
“Come on, I think I deserve an explanation. One day you’re calling me to pick you up from Luca’s place, and the next you’re walking through the door with Lena and you look like a completely different person. I would totally understand if you acted the way you did simply because they made you, but please at least give me a reason. Any reason at all.”
“There’s only one reason I can give you Emily, and it’s that I’m not who I used to be. From the moment I met Luca and his group, I was different. I acted the way I did because that’s who I am. I’m not the person you think I am, and I would apologize, but I’m not sorry for it. I am who I am, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Now,” She pushed her aside, careful to not hurt her. “There’s something I need to do. If you’ll excuse me.” Without waiting for a reply, she walked away, heading to where she knew Jonathan would be. It was better for her to separate herself from Emily. After all, she’d live forever, and the death of a dear friend would only hurt her.
