She was quiet when she left his office. She was quiet when Gage asked her what was wrong. She was quiet when he received the call from Larry. She was quiet when they arrived. She was quiet in the elevator.
They stepped out and she spoke.
"What's going on"
Larry turned from the panel, he waved them over to the screen.
She looked up.
Looking back was a man with a big yellow smile, like the Cheshire cat with no dental plan. Most of his face was obscured by the dark, she couldn't see his eyes.
"Hello"
"Who are you"
He placed a hand on his chest, she noticed he was wearing a black racing suit with a white skull in the center.
"My name is Obsidian, I have a few demands" Brandon stepped forward, he placed a hand on the control panel. A button glowed.
"What's your ransom"
His smile faded.
"Pardon"
"Your ransom, what's the or else if we don't meet these demands"
Obsidian brought a hand to his chin, the white fabric of the glove contrasted with his dark skin.
The hand lowered then came back up, holding a small vial containing a green liquid. His smile grew wider.
"If you meet my demands then I'll give you this"
Gage tilted his head and stepped forward.
"Why is that important"
The man in black leaned back in his chair.
"Oh this, this little thing is what I like to call. An antidote, one you would have use for"
Mara felt her hands clench, her face heated as she walked forward.
Her hand slammed onto the console.
"Tell me the formula. Now"
He raised his other hand signaling for her to calm down.
"If I give you the formula then I lose my wager"
Wyatt limped forward. Dr. Doe said to keep pressure of his leg as much as possible. He was getting better, he can walk without the crutches.
"Can you please tell us what this wager is"
The smile.
"Oh yes of course. But first my demands, very simple I wish the city pay enough for what plans I have in the future'
Of course the guy wants money.
"Cliche much"
Rhett smacked Wyatt upside the head.
"Second, I want something from you"
Mara squared her shoulders and grimaced.
"What"
He leaned forward. His face fully revealed. He had long dark brown hair which was tied back into a ponytail. His eyes were the colour of coal, his nose was long and crooked. There was only one man she knew with that nose.
"I want the plans for the hydrater-ray and the chemical formula for liquid imagination"
No.
No.
Shit. Shit. No.
Larry formed An X with his arms.
He brought them down.
"No. Absolutely not. Those plans are dangerous, even if you promised to pay more money than the city in total has I would not give you those plans"
Obsidian just laughed.
"Oh I now perfectly well how dangerous those plans are. That's why I want them"
He shook his head.
"No, not for anything in the world. There is nothing you can offer that will possibly change my mind"
Obsidian chuckled and lifted the vial again, his grin growing more malicious.
"Nothing you say"
Mara nodded.
"Nothing you can offer will make us give you those papers"
"Not even him"
She turned to where he was pointing.
Gage.
He knew.
"Why are you pointing at me"
The man in black smiled, twirling the glass tube between his fingers.
"Oh, that poison you drank is a special toxin of my own invention, no antidote you make will kill it, only supply a dormantation if you will. This antidote was specifically designed to kill off every last drop in mere seconds. Took a long time to manufacture, this is my wager. You give me what I want and I will allow him to live, you only really have about 5 more days so chose wisely"
By the time he was finished talking, Larry was having to hold Mara from punching (and possibly breaking) the control panel. Brandon held a firm grip on Wyatt's arm in case he went to punch something as well.
Rhett just stood by Gage. They both clung to one another like it was the last time they would see each other.
Brandon spoke up.
"And how long do we have to meet each demand"
"Oh the money I have other wagers for, but that's the mayor's problem. As for you, you have the next 24 hours to give me those plans"
He nodded.
"And if we don't"
He thought.
"Well let's just say that if I fail to see those plans in my hand in the next 24 hours. You won't get to say your goodbyes"
Mara pulled herself from Larry's grip.
"You'll kill him"
"Oh heavens no, you just won't see him when he passes. If you do give the plans I'll give you a hint on where I am. Then you'll have to find me remember you only have five days. After that, well it's only a matter of time before the flatline"
The call ended.
Her blood was boiling, she couldn't feel the pain when she whipped around and slammed her fist into a glass door next to her.
The glass hit the floor, drops of blood and small bits of ripped skin litter the sharp edges. She looked at her hand. Deep red cuts decorated her knuckles. She didn't care.
"Mom... what do we do"
She turned, a painting of rage covered her rough canvas like skin.
"You are going to stay home, you are not to enter the field under any circumstances. Do you understand" the authority in her voice made him shrink slightly.
"Yes mom"
She turned to the boys.
"You boys need to buy us as much time as possible"
They nodded.
"Larry take him home please"
The mechanic ushered the boy to the elevator.
When it closed she turned to the three infront of her.
"I want you to find that man, get that vial. Do I make myself clear"
They nodded.
"Mrs. Janets"
"Yes Wyatt"
The red driver rubbed the back of his head.
"How do we deal with him"
"You don't"
He passed a quizzical look to Brandon.
"Are you"
The boy in blue scoffed.
"Obviously, you mess with a bull you get the horns"
A dry intimidating chuckled came from the older womans throat. The boys turned to her, their faces dressed in pale colouring.
She adjusted her glasses and grinned, it looked sadistic and murderous.
"A bull, tch no. Brandon I am not the bull, the bull is a father's role, the one who protects the family. I am the mother, the watcher of the young the guiding soul for their minds. And that bastard"
She turned to leave, entering the elevator she bared a look that would bring grown men to their knees.
"He just poked a bear, but unlike bulls and bears..."
Another evil smile spread across her face.
"I won't leave anything behind"
