Taking a deep breath to clear my anger, I knocked on his door and waited a couple of seconds for it to open. Seeing his beautiful face only made it hurt more.
It was around nine in the night and I was getting ready to go to bed but I just had to talk to him about it. I just had to. My family was already settled in their cabin, the other two families would arrive tomorrow. I was thinking all evening in the room I was staying in. Which was the room I slept since I arrived here two days ago? While I was talking to my mom I asked her an important question I wanted to know.
"So I was trying to figure out why my heat was so terrible and painful even though Kyston was there," I tell her, and sadness filled her eyes. I already knew something was up. "There are only a few factors," she says and we continued to walk on the grass. "What are they?" I eagerly asked. "Well, the chances of your heat being worse than a normal wolf is when you're away from your mate, rejection if your mate has a high rank like an alpha or beta. Kyston being the King would definitely be painful and the other option is if your mate has mated with another before," the hesitantly said the last part. A growl emerged from me, my wolf demanding to shift and take control. "Calm down," my mother whispered. I shut my eyes tightly to focus on pushing my wolf away.
Mates were supposed to go through the heat together and you're only supposed to compete the mating process with your mate. Look at Kyston, he was the king. He had beautiful girls at his feet. Obviously, he would be tempted but it hurt no matter what. No, I'm not the type to jump to conclusions but I knew he already had sex with another because he didn't show an ounce of pain. He was supposed to feel the fire. And he didn't. He was completely fine.
"Hey," he smiles. All my anger was almost pushed out of the window just by his smile but it wasn't so easy.
"Can we talk?" I say and he nods, letting me into his room. I sat down on his bed and he sat down opposite me, waiting for me to break the silence but I was thinking how to say this. I needed to be careful with upsetting him because he can kill me in a second. Literally.
"I realised something," I start off, choosing my words wisely. "What is that?" He eagerly asked. Breathe in, breathe out, you can do this. "That you didn't feel the heat," I choked out. His face falls, guilt and regret evidence in his eyes. I knew it, this was just more proof. "Avira, I can explain," he starts, trying to reach for my hand but I pull away. "Did you mate already, Kyston?" I asked. It was obvious but I needed him to say it. "I'm so sorry-" he apologized but I cut him off.
"Say it."
"Av-"
"Say it."
"I can e-" I cut him off again. "Just say it, Kyston, just say it," I choked out with tears running down my eyes. Kyston was silent as he stared at me, I didn't give him the satisfaction of letting him wipe my eyes dry.
He sighed, looking straight into my eyes. "I mated already," he finally admitted.
It hurts way more than I thought, actually hearing him say it. My heart hurt. It felt like someone was squeezing it. My throat felt lumpy and I could only picture Kyston with another girl, much better and prettier than me.
"How many times?" I asked before he could say anything else. That grabbed his attention and he looked at me again with soften eyes. Kyston covered his eyes with his palms and pressed them down, his fingers pulling at his hair. "I was a reckless teenager, Avira," he says and my eyes began to water.
"How much?"
"I didn't care about my mate at the time, I was reckless and all the wealth and power was in my head," he continued. "So three times?" I asked, narrowing my eyes. "No, it was a lot of times but I promise-" I stopped him again, not wanting to hear him continue. I knew he regretted it and he knew he hurt me. "Okay, I'm really tired," I got off the bed and walked to the door but he followed me, constantly calling me back.
Just as I was about to walk out, he grabbed my hand. "No stay please, I can explain," Kyston begged, his own eyes becoming glossy. "I'm not upset, I promise, I just want to be alone, yeah? I'll see you tomorrow," I whispered, removing my hand from his and allowing the tingles to die.
"Av, please?" He begged again. But I continued walking, shutting the door hard as I ran away.
