A/N for this story zexal is pronounced Zee ale it just sounds a bit better for a spirit name

Vector stared down at the fox spirit laying on the bed. He had grown feverish, his new form slowly settling. Well he shouldn't say new. He has seen the fox like this before. Back before Vector or Yuma existed. Back when it was just Rei and Zexal.

Many years ago two foxes were running through the woods, one a brilliant orange color like a flame, the other black as a starless night. And they were not ordinary foxes, no these two were young spirits. They don't know much about themselves except their names Rei and Zexal. They were not even separated into light or dark yet and only had one tail. But the nearby village did not care, they saw the spirits as gifts from the gods and declared them protectors.

The black fox chased the orange one catching up quickly. With a burst of speed he jumped forward taking his human form and pointed the staff now grasped in his hands at the other. "You need to be quicker Rei. How can you protect a village if you're slow?" He said with a chuckle lowering the staff.

"Don't make fun of me Zexal, where I lack in speed I make up for in magic. Now come on, I'm pretty sure the shrine maidens left out sweets for us again." Rei said smiling before running off. Zexal following right after.

The two spirits now in their technical teenage years were showing development in their powers neither divided yet. Rei was now a three tailed fox. However Zexal still only had one tail. He was struggling to keep up with the magic being taught by the shrine workers. He never understood the prayers or seals. Envy began to blossom in the once pure heart, the fates had made their choices. And the fox followed the whispers of the shadows.

"Zexal? Where did you go? Please...come back its lonely here." Rei mumbled looking out the window of the shrine. After the black fox dissapeared they had forbidden the remaining one from leaving the shrine. The spirit grew lonely without his friend, and being cooped up in the shrine made him bored. How he wished to run through the forest with his friend once more.

Days turned into months, months to years. Rei watched shrine workers come and go, he knew better than to get to attached. They would only grow old and die. Then one day, everything changed. There was a fire in the heart of the village. Rei ran to help the towns people as was his duty. But what he saw in the heart of the fire broke his own heart.

Standing there in the flames nine tails burning brightly, yet the power could not have been darker. Was Zexal the fates had chosen him to be the shadow to Rei's light and under those shadows he blossomed quickly learning how to use the dark magic he was offered.

"Hello...did you miss me old friend? I finally caught up with you, I'm just as strong if not stronger!" Zexal laughed a fresh wound covered one eye. An exorcists had tried and subdue the raging g spirit.

"Z..zexal? What happened to you?" Rei asked staring in disbeleif at what had become of his friend.

"The darkness claimed me...remember the shrine workers taught us for every light spirit a dark one is made and vice versa. Well you were the light and I your shadow. This was all dated. And destiny can not be changed." Zexal flared up his fire.

"Yes it can...I won't let this be how your story ends!" Rei ran towards his old friend, what he was about to do was forbidden but the darkness did not fit his friend. So he used one banned spell. A spell to switch their fates. He would become the shadow to his friend light. And the minute the spell hit, Rei and Zexal died. At least mentally speaking.

Rei kept his memories, Zexal however lost his own. So Rei in order to disconnect himself from his old life and start a new choose a new name. Vector sounded good to him. And the scared fox spirit no longer possessing nine tails instead three moved slowly the only proof the spirit was alive. He needed a new name too.

"Rest...we will see each6again one day... Yuma-kun." And with that Vector took his new home in the shadows, and he watched closely as a messenger of light arrived taking the weakened spirit away from the angry and confused villagers. Their paths split here, but one day they will meet again.

That's today's chapter, and here is a doodle of angry Zexal and I will say this now I've given up on drawing his hair so I gave him a new hair style.
